Composites with Hydrophobic Surfaces
Fibre Chemistry, 2015Methods for depositing fluoropolymer coatings onto the surfaces of carbon-fiber materials were examined. The water repellants were fluoroplastics F-2M and F-4D, use of which could more than double the hydrophobicity of the fibrous materials. It was shown that the fluoroplastic coatings had high chemical resistance.

Composition of Titan's Surface
2009The Huygens Probe returned the first in situ data on Titan's surface composition in January 2005. Although Huygens landed on a dry plain, the Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer (GCMS) showed evidence of methane moisture in the near subsurface suggesting methane precipitation at some time in the past.

ZnSe(100) surface: Atomic configurations, composition, and surface dipole
Physical Review B, 1994Chemical composition, core-level line shape, and electron affinity measurements are performed on the Se-terminated (2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}1) and Zn-terminated c(2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}2) ZnSe(100) surfaces. The (2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}1) reconstruction corresponds to a complete monolayer of Se dimers with one filled

Applied Surface Science, 1984
Abstract In equilibrium, the composition of the surface of an alloy will, in general, differ from that of the bulk. The broken-bond model is applicable to alloys with atoms of virtually equal size. If the heat of alloy formation is zero, the component of lower heat of atomization is found enriched in the surface.

Surface metal matrix composites
Materials & Design, 2001Abstract This investigation has presented two simple inexpensive processing techniques (direct and indirect) to produce surface metal matrix composites (SMMCs) by the casting route. SMMCs signify that the surface layer of a pre-selected thickness in the product contains the dispersoids, while its core is free from solid inclusion particles. Therefore,

Surface Degradation of Composites
2010Abstract Polymer composite materials are subject to degradation if not appropriately protected from the environment. Composite materials having polymeric matrices are susceptible to degradation from heat, sunlight, ozone, atomic oxygen (in space), moisture, solvents (chemicals), fatigue, excessive loading, and combinations of these ...

Simple mechanics of materials analyses for predicting the static strength of surface notched (scratched) resin-matrix composite laminates are presented. The strength predictions are compared with and are found to be in excellent agreement with the available experimental data.
