Cupid is doomed: An analysis of the stability of the inner uranian satellites [PDF]

open access: yesIcarus, 2012
We have explored the stability of the inner Uranian satellites using simulations based on the most recent observational data. We find that, across a wide range of mass assumptions, the system is unstable, resulting in the eventual crossing of orbits and probable subsequent collision of moons.

Predictions of the mutual events of the Uranian satellites occurring in 2006–2009 [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy and Astrophysics, 2006
Context. Every 42 years, the Earth and the Sun pass through the equatorial plane of Uranus allowing observations of mutual occultations and eclipses of the main satellites of Uranus. The next opportunity will occur in 2006-2009. Aims. Such events are uncommon and very rare, and they allow us to accurately determine the inclinations of the orbits of the

Observations of Five Major Uranian Satellites during 2013–2020 Based on Gaia DR3

open access: yesAstrophysical Journal, Supplement Series
A total of 10,339 positions of the five major Uranian satellites (Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, Oberon and Miranda) were collected at the Yunnan Observatories from 2013 to 2020 with the 1.0 m astrometric reflector.

THE ORBITS OF THE URANIAN SATELLITES AND RINGS, THE GRAVITY FIELD OF THE URANIAN SYSTEM, AND THE ORIENTATION OF THE POLE OF URANUS

open access: yesAstronomical Journal, 2014
French et al. determined the orbits of the Uranian rings, the orientation of the pole of Uranus, and the gravity harmonics of Uranus from Earth-based and Voyager ring occultations. Jacobson et al. determined the orbits of the Uranian satellites and the masses of Uranus and its satellites from Earth-based astrometry and observations acquired with the ...

Spectroscopic Links among Giant Planet Irregular Satellites and Trojans

open access: yesThe Planetary Science Journal, 2023
We collect near-infrared spectra (∼0.75–2.55 μ m) of four Jovian irregular satellites and visible spectra (∼0.32–1.00 μ m) of two Jovian irregular satellites, two Uranian irregular satellites, and four Neptune Trojans.

Strong Tidal Dissipation at Uranus?

open access: yesThe Planetary Science Journal, 2023
Geophysical estimates of paleo heat fluxes on the Uranian moons Miranda and Ariel are in the range of 25–75 mW m ^−2 . For a canonical Uranus dissipation factor Q = 18,000, expected equilibrium tidal heating rates for these satellites are less than 6 mW ...

Unraveling the Geologic History of Miranda’s Inverness Corona

open access: yesThe Planetary Science Journal, 2023
Miranda is the only icy body whose surface is known to contain the enigmatic features called corona—ovoid to trapezoidal areas of deformation. In this work, we seek to constrain potential formation mechanisms for Inverness Corona, the youngest known ...

Longitudinal Variation of H2O Ice Absorption on Miranda

open access: yesThe Planetary Science Journal, 2022
Many tidally locked icy satellites in the outer solar system show leading/trailing hemispherical asymmetries in the strength of near-infrared (NIR) H _2 O ice absorption bands, in which the absorption bands are stronger on the leading hemisphere. This is
