Surface current distributions around surface flaws in metals
Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. A. Mathematical and Physical Sciences, 1984One method employed to detect surface flaws in metals, such as fatigue cracks, is to pass an alternating current through the specimen, and to probe the plane surface for irregularities in the field produced by the flaw. This paper compares the thin-skin surface field distributions obtained from spherical cap volume defects at the surface with the ...

Abstract This chapter deals with the case of a single electron travelling above just one period of a perfectly conducting metallic grating. The charge density distribution induced on the surface is derived and discussed in some detail, and the emitted radiation is attributed to the acceleration of this surface charge distribution.

Surface Electromigration and Current Crowding
2010Steps on macroscopic surfaces provide a useful model system for quantifying electron scattering at defects in nanostructures, where the large surface/volume ratio will cause surface effects to dominate. Here, the effects of electron scattering at surface steps are quantified using thin silver films with (111) surface orientation.

Surface currents on ideal plasmas
Physics of Plasmas, 2010The surface (or “skin”) current that can flow at a perturbed interface between plasma and vacuum is considered in the approximation where a surface marks a sharp transition from plasma to vacuum. A short magnetohydrodynamic calculation gives an exact and general expression for the component perpendicular to the average of the magnetic field either side

Classification of surface current maps
Deep Sea Research Part I: Oceanographic Research Papers, 2013Classification of ocean data maps is important for analysis of ocean data. Here, we compare self-organizing map (SOM) analysis with cluster methods such as the Ward method and K-means method. The HF (high-frequency) radar surface current data east of Okinawa Island, Japan were used for the comparison.

Westward intensification of surface currents
1985All the great civilizations of the past arose in lands protected from the cold, the eternal foe of life. It is true that more recent European civilization originated on a continent less endowed with the warmth of the Sun, but it, too, seemed to be protected from the pernicious breath of the north by an invisible friendly hand.
