Velocity Boundary Conditions for the Simulation of Free Surface Fluid Flow
Journal of Computational Physics, 1994Abstract Accurate velocity boundary conditions are critical to the successful simulation of free surface fluid flow. It is shown in this paper that previous approaches for the assignment of free surface velocity boundary conditions in marker and cell methods artificially introduce asymmetry and can even cause the simulation to break ...

Measurement of free-surface flow velocity using controlled surface waves
Flow Measurement and Instrumentation, 2005The paper describes a non-intrusive velocity measurement method that innovatively combines image velocimetry and fluid mechanics principles to determine the free-surface velocity of a moving liquid. Controlled surface waves are generated at the surface of open-channel channel flows.

Flow Visualization, Surface Pressure and Velocity Measurements on a Cylindrical Surface with a Bump
25th AIAA Aerodynamic Measurement Technology and Ground Testing Conference, 2006A cylindrical bump with a spherical free end has been mounted on a cylindrical surface, and flow visualization, surface pressure measurements and the turbulent velocity statistics measurements were performed. The thickness of the turbulent boundary layer was thinner than the bump height at the position of the bump.

Velocity circulations in free-surface flows
International Journal of Engineering Science, 1996Abstract The equations of balance between horizontal and vertical accelerations on a free surface are derived from the Euler equations for vertical flows with arbitrary distribution of density. From these equations it follows that the velocity circulations on a free surface are invariants of motion.

Velocity distribution in decelerating flow over rough surfaces
Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering, 2002An experimental program was undertaken to study turbulent boundary layers formed in decelerating open channel flows. The flows over a smooth surface and three rough surfaces were examined. Tests were conducted at a subcritical Froude number (~0.2) and varying depth Reynolds numbers (64 000 < Red < 88 000).

Explicit Velocity for Modelling Surface Complex Flows with Cellular Automata and Applications
2006Fluid-dynamics is an important field of Cellular Automata applications, that give rise also to specialised models as lattice gas automata and lattice Boltzmann models. These models come up against difficulties for applications to large scale (kilometres) phenomena. Our research group Empedocles faces up to macroscopic phenomena concerning surface flows,

Free Surface, Velocity Gradient Flow Past Hemisphere
Journal of the Hydraulics Division, 1970The drag on a hemisphere in a finite-flow field with free surface effects is evaluated by successively studying six flow fields, which allows the study of one new variable at a time. These flow fields are: the semi-infinite uniform and nonuniform flow fields, the finite uniform and nonuniform flow fields without free surface effects, and the finite ...

Estimation of the surface velocity of debris flow with computer-based spatial filtering
Applied Optics, 1998A computer-based spatial-filtering velocimeter to measure the surface velocity of natural debris flow is described. This is a simple and interesting technique implemented with a spatial filter constructed as a software program that processes the video image of debris flow instead of a hardware implementation.
