Estimation of the surface velocity of debris flow with computer-based spatial filtering

Applied Optics, 1998
A computer-based spatial-filtering velocimeter to measure the surface velocity of natural debris flow is described. This is a simple and interesting technique implemented with a spatial filter constructed as a software program that processes the video image of debris flow instead of a hardware implementation.

Flow velocity in non-uniform gravel surface: An experimental investigation

The evaluation of the kinematic characteristics of flow in gravel-bed rivers is one of the most important problems. In the present paper the stream-wise velocity profiles are inves-tigated on the basis of data collected in a straight laboratory gravel-bed flume.

Surface velocity computation of debris flows by vector field measurements

Physics and Chemistry of the Earth, Part B: Hydrology, Oceans and Atmosphere, 2000
Abstract The surface velocity of natural debris flows is one of the main physical parameters for developing effective disaster prevention techniques. The authors already presented the result of velocity vector field measurement of debris flow by the spatio temporal derivative space method.

Measurement of free-surface velocity of liquid lithium flow for IFMIF

Fusion Engineering and Design, 2008
Abstract Experiments on the high-speed liquid lithium flow with free surface were conducted using the lithium circulation loop at Osaka University for International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF). The test section of the loop has a contraction nozzle which is 1/2.5 scale of IFMIF and provides a flat plane jet of 70 mm width and 10 mm ...

Energetics of gas-surface interactions in transitional flows at entry velocities

Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets, 1991
The direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method has been used to calculate the molecular velocity and energy distributions of molecules striking a surface after traversing a shock layer in hypersonic transitional flow. The calculations were performed for a 1.6-m-diameter sphere at a nominal velocity for re-entry of 7.5 km/s over an altitude range of ...

Effect of Hydrophobic Surface on Velocity Profile of Pipe Flow

2017
The branch of fluid mechanics is also familiar with biomechanics recently. The combination of hydrodynamic The branch of fluid mechanics is also familiar with biomechanics recently. The combination of hydrodynamic and mechanical specification of the flow can reach the complex description of the liquid flow in the hydraulic system.

Turbulence Characterisation of High-Velocity Free-Surface Flows

2007
In high-velocity free-surface flows, air is continuously being trapped and released through the free-surface. Such high-velocity highly-aerated flows cannot be studied numerically because of the large number of relevant equations and parameters. Herein an advanced signal processing of traditional single- and dual-tip conductivity probes provides some ...

Entropy-based depth-averaged velocity assessment from surface flow velocity

Discharge estimation at a river site depends on local hydraulic conditions identified by recording water levels. In fact, stage monitoring is straightforward and relatively inexpensive compared with the cost necessary to carry out flow velocity measurements which are, however, limited to low flows and constrained by the accessibility of the site.
