Surface roughness effect on surface impedance of superconductors

Journal of Applied Physics, 1994
The measured values of microwave surface resistance and reactance of a superconductor have generally three contributions from (1) the intrinsic properties, (2) the internal defects, and (3) the external surface roughness. In this paper, we formulate the increased factor of surface resistance and reactance of superconductors using Morgan’s square ...

Surface waves over a convex impedance surface

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1999
The existence of the surface wave in an upward refracting medium has been predicted by Raspet et al. [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 89, 107–114 (1991)]. Making use of an acoustic analogy, one is able to study the surface waves above a convex cylinder and, hence, to simulate the propagation of sound over an impedance ground in an upward refracting medium.

Analytical Modeling of Surface Waves on High Impedance Surfaces

2009
In this paper, analytical modeling of natural modes is proposed for the rapid and accurate analysis of various high impedance surfaces (HIS) composed of dense grids of frequency selective surface (FSS) elements printed on an electrically thin grounded dielectric slab, and on a wire media slab.

Edge Excited Surface Waves on Impedance Surfaces

2005 IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society International Symposium, 2005
In this paper, the surface waves excited at the edge of a wedge characterized by anisotropic impedance faces are analyzed, when the edge is illuminated by an arbitrarily polarized plane wave at oblique incidence. In the wedge scattering problem, these guided wave modes are associated with pole singularities exhibited by the angular spectra for the ...

Tensor Impedance Surfaces

2010
Abstract : We have investigated and determined how the tensor properties of an impedance surface can be shaped to control and steer surface waves in a very general way, all the while preserving phase information. Two findings made this possible. First, it was discovered through eigenvalue analysis that a TM or TE surface bound wave tends to favor ...

Surface Impedance and Granularity in Superconducting Cuprates

MRS Proceedings, 1990
ABSTRACTThe rf residual surface resistance Rres is an important figure of merit for superconducting microwave devices and for establishing the homogeneity of superconducting surfaces. In granular superconductors not only are high residual rf surface resistance values Rres observed, but also strong field dependencies of Rres(T,ω, Hrf) and the penetraton

Impedance modulation patterns for artificial-impedance-surface antennas

2013 IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society International Symposium (APSURSI), 2013
Artificial impedance surface antennas (AISAs) radiate by leaking surface waves from a spatially-modulated artificial impedance surface (AIS) whose modulation is designed to produce a preferred radiation pattern and polarization. Using the AISA radiation integral, a simple equation is obtained that quickly computes the modulation pattern for an AISA ...

On focusing of surface waves on impedance guiding surfaces

Journal of Communications Technology and Electronics, 2017
The process of focusing of surface electromagnetic waves on impedance guiding surfaces is considered in the ray approximation with the help of a 2D model of a plane surface. An estimate of the influence of the wave properties of the field on this process is given.
