Surface-chemical and -morphological gradients [PDF]
Surface gradients of chemistry or morphology represent powerful tools for the high-throughput investigation of interfacial phenomena in the areas of physics, chemistry, materials science and biology. A wide variety of methods for the fabrication of such gradients has been developed in recent years, relying on principles ranging from diffusion to time ...

Surface Morphology of GaN: Flat versus Vicinal Surfaces [PDF]
The surface morphology of GaN films grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) is investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). A comparison is made between flat and vicinal surfaces. The wurtzite structure of GaN leads to special morphological features such as step pairing and triangularly shaped islands.

Probabilities of Earthquake Occurrences along the Sumatra-Andaman Subduction Zone
Earthquake activities along the Sumatra-Andaman Subduction Zone (SASZ) were clarified using the derived frequency-magnitude distribution in terms of the (i) most probable maximum magnitudes, (ii) return periods and (iii) probabilities of earthquake ...

Anisotropic Drop Morphologies on Corrugated Surfaces [PDF]
The spreading of liquid drops on surfaces corrugated with micron-scale parallel grooves is studied both experimentally and numerically. Because of the surface patterning, the typical final drop shape is no longer spherical. The elongation direction can be either parallel or perpendicular to the direction of the grooves, depending on the initial drop ...

Morphology and surface reconstructions of GaN(11̄00) surfaces [PDF]
GaN is grown by plasma-assisted molecular-beam epitaxy on ZnO(11̄00) substrates. Well-oriented (11̄00) GaN surfaces are obtained, and (11̄01) oriented facets are also observed. On the GaN(11̄00) surfaces under Ga-rich conditions, a surface reconstruction with approximate symmetry of “4×5” is found.
