On surface drift currents in the ocean

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1979
A new model of surface drift currents is constructed using the full nonlinear equations of motion. This model includes the balance between Coriolis forces due to the mean and wave-induced motions and the surface wind stresses. The approach used in the analysis is similar to the work by Craik & Leibovich (1976) and Leibovich (1977), but the emphasis

Method for ocean surface currents measurement by SAR

SPIE Proceedings, 2008
A new method for mapping shallow water topography surface currents from SAR image is introduced based on the shallow water topography SAR imaging mechanism. M4S (presented by Romeiser R.) was used to forward simulate radar signatures of the oceanic features over the ocean surface.

Airborne Ocean Surface Current Measurements for Offshore Applications

Offshore Technology Conference, 2015
Previous research programs have developed and demonstrated the capability to extract near-shore surface currents from airborne sequences of visual images of surface waves. This same technique can be used for remote sensing of the open ocean to retrieve surface currents over extensive areas in a relatively short period of time.

Ocean Surface Current Detection by Synthetic Aperture Radar

1981
Synthetic aperture radar Doppler histories have been used to obtain estimates of ocean surface currents. For currents in excess of 1 meter/second, airborne radar measurements agree with surface observations to within 25 percent. Satellite measurements, however, yield current speeds far in excess of surface estimates.

Remote sensing of river and ocean surface currents

SPIE Proceedings, 2002
Vast amounts of energy and chemical constituents are moved about within ocean and river currents. IN the case of deep ocean currents, some reasonable estimates of this transport can be derived from models and sea surface altimetry data. River flows can be estimated form river channel models and indirectly form stage/discharge relationships.

Problems in measuring currents near the ocean surface

OCEANS '77 Conference Record, 1977
Current meter intercomparisons often show large systematic errors when either the current meters or their mooring floats are exposed to surface gravity waves. Ideally, stable platforms and fast, linear, current sensors are needed to accurately measure Eulerian currents in the presence of waves. The extent to which various meter and mooring combinations
