Ocean Surface Current Detection by Synthetic Aperture Radar

1981
Synthetic aperture radar Doppler histories have been used to obtain estimates of ocean surface currents. For currents in excess of 1 meter/second, airborne radar measurements agree with surface observations to within 25 percent. Satellite measurements, however, yield current speeds far in excess of surface estimates.

Remote sensing of river and ocean surface currents

SPIE Proceedings, 2002
Vast amounts of energy and chemical constituents are moved about within ocean and river currents. IN the case of deep ocean currents, some reasonable estimates of this transport can be derived from models and sea surface altimetry data. River flows can be estimated form river channel models and indirectly form stage/discharge relationships.

Problems in measuring currents near the ocean surface

OCEANS '77 Conference Record, 1977
Current meter intercomparisons often show large systematic errors when either the current meters or their mooring floats are exposed to surface gravity waves. Ideally, stable platforms and fast, linear, current sensors are needed to accurately measure Eulerian currents in the presence of waves. The extent to which various meter and mooring combinations
