Surface Processing by a Pulsed Laser
1984The pulsed laser approach to surface glazing is analyzed. A heat transfer model is used to evaluate the melt depth and temperature obtained with different laser inputs. Laser parameters such as pulse shape and duration are discussed in terms of energy efficiency and molten material behaviour.

Excimer laser light provides a rapid and efficient means for surface alloying and modification of ceramic materials. The laser pulse can melt the surface of the ceramic as well as a deposited metal layer.
