MEIS investigations of surface structure [PDF]
The early work of the FOM-AMOLF group in Amsterdam clearly demonstrated the potential of medium energy ion scattering (MEIS), typically using 100 keV H+ incident ions, to investigate the structure of surfaces, but most current applications of the method ...

Predicting extreme defects in additive manufacturing remains a key challenge limiting its structural reliability. This study proposes a statistical framework that integrates Extreme Value Theory with advanced process indicators to explore defect–process relationships and improve the estimation of critical defect sizes. The approach provides a basis for

Excellent combinations of strength and impact toughness are obtained in a bilayer composite of high‐strength carbide‐free bainitic (CFB) steel and high‐ductility twinning‐induced plasticity (TWIP) steel. The composite absorbs energy at small strains when the notch is placed on the TWIP side and at high strains when the notch is placed on the CFB side ...

Charge order at magnetite Fe3O4(001): surface and Verwey phase transitions
At ambient conditions, the Fe$_3$O$_4$(001) surface shows a $(\sqrt{2}\times \sqrt{2})R45^o$ reconstruction that has been proposed as the surface analog of the bulk phase below the Verwey transition temperature, T$_V$.

Surface energetics and structure of the Ge wetting layer on Si(100) [PDF]
Ge deposited on Si(100) initially forms heteroepitaxial layers, which grow to a critical thickness of ~3 MLs before the appearance of three-dimensional strain relieving structures.
