Solid Exoplanet Surfaces and Relief [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Characterizing the solid surface of an exoplanet will be difficult. Detecting mountains and reliefs in rocky exoplanets is certainly even more challenging. In this chapter, we try to investigate which techniques could be used for these purposes. A good starting point is to list a number of techniques that have been used in our own solar system and to ...

Synergistic Solar Interfacial Evaporation and Photocatalysis Enabled by a Hierarchical Porous Hydrogel Reactor

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A tree‐inspired hydrogel interfacial reactor couples solar evaporation with photocatalysis for simultaneous desalination and waste water treatment. The bilayer design achieves 2.14 kg·m−2·h−1 evaporation rate with 79% dye degradation under one sun, demonstrating that photothermal heating and evaporation induced pollutant enrichment create a self ...

Deep surface relief grating in azobenzene-containing materials using a low-intensity 532 nm laser

open access: yesOptical Materials: X, 2019
The inscription of deep surface relief grating (SRG) in glassy monomeric azobenzene materials using a low intensity diode pumped solid state (DPSS) laser operating at 532 nm is demonstrated.

Hierarchical Primary‐Secondary Coordination Synchronizes Ion Flux and Sulfur Redox in Solid Polymer Electrolytes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Hierarchical coordination engineering redistributes Li+ from anion‐dominated pairing toward polymer‐mediated binding. Strong primary sites promote salt dissociation, while distributed secondary sites sustain dynamic hopping pathways. This coordination landscape couples ion flux with polysulfide conversion, suppresses transport‐conversion decoupling ...

Mechanistic Control of C─H Bond Activation and C─C Coupling in Light‐Driven Methane Conversion to C2+ Products over Multifunctional Photocatalysts

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Methane photocatalytic activation under mild conditions remains a formidable challenge in the synthesis of solar fuels. In this review, we emphasize the growing importance of multifunctional materials and hybrid systems within a unified mechanistic framework that integrates selective C─H bond activation, formation and control of intermediates, C─C ...

Mosses Like It Rough—Growth Form Specific Responses of Mosses, Herbaceous and Woody Plants to Micro-Relief Heterogeneity

open access: yesDiversity, 2012
Micro-relief heterogeneity can lead to substantial variability in microclimate and hence niche opportunities on a small scale. We explored the relationship between plant species richness and small-scale heterogeneity of micro-relief on the subtropical ...

Broadband antireflective surface-relief structure for THz optics

open access: yesOptics Express, 2007
The requirements for a broadband antireflective structure in the THz spectral region are derived. Optimized structural parameters for a surface-relief grating adapted to the spectrum of an intended THz pulse are deduced. The effect of a structure fabricated into Topas((R)) by a single-point diamond-turning process is demonstrated.

Two‐Photon Grayscale Lithography (2GL) of High Mechanical and Optical Quality 3D Silica Glass Microstructures

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Two‐photon grayscale lithography (2GL) enables high‐speed and precise 3D printing of thermolyzed silica glass microstructures with optical‐grade surface quality, high quality factors, and mechanical strength utilizing a custom‐made pre‐glass resist based on polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) modified with a high‐sensitivity Norrish type II ...
