Automated Measurement of Slurry Surface Settlement
Geotechnical Testing Journal, 1990Abstract An automated float method for measuring slurry surface settlement is described. The system consists of a Perspex float which is denser than water but lighter than the slurry into which it penetrates slightly and floats on the slurry/water interface. Settlement of this float is then automatically tracked using an LVDT. Comparison

Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology, 2021
The ground surfaces induced by the subway tunnel excavation has been an issue of great concern in the engineering field. When building subway tunnels in rugged mountainous cities, settlement problems are inevitable for shallow buried sections. Therefore,

Effects of tunnel face distance on surface settlement
Underground activities such as tunnel excavation may cause soil movements around the excavation area and subsequently the ground surface. Several tunnel construction methods have been developed during the last decades and the most significant effort is ...

Reliability analysis of shallow tunnel with surface settlement
Geomechanics and Engineering, 2017Based on the reliability theory and limit analysis method, the roof stability of a shallow tunnel is investigated under the condition of surface settlement. Nonlinear Hoek-Brown failure criterion is adopted in the present analysis. With the consideration of surface settlement, the internal energy and external work are calculated.

Surface Settlement Due to Shear Stresses at Depth
Journal of Geotechnical Engineering, 1994Mindlin's solution for surface vertical displacement due to a horizontal force at depth is first examined and then integrated for shear stresses acting on a long rectangular reinforcing strip. Four types (constant, linear decrease, power‐law decrease, and triangular) of shear stress variations, are considered.

Larval Settlement and Surfaces: Implications in Development of Antifouling Strategies
2008Marine biofouling is a natural process that imposes technical operational problems and economic losses on marine-related activities. Marine biofouling communities are complex, diverse, highly dynamic ecosystems consisting of a range of organisms. Larvae of these organisms spend a part of their lives in the planktonic stage before settling on a surface.

Surface settlements due to shield tunnelling in Rome
Bulletin of the International Association of Engineering Geology, 1980Extensive field observations have been made of ground settlements associated with driving twin tunnels through a variety of soil types. Analysis of data shows that values of ground settlements are directly related to the size and depth of tunnels, to the soil characteristics, and to timing of grouting operations behind the lining.

Predictive model for the surface settlement caused by the excavation of twin tunnels
, 2021It is of great difficulty to accurately predict the stratum deformation caused by double-track or twin-tunnel construction because of the complex coupled interaction of the two tunnels.

Ground surface settlements of sands densified with explosives
Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Ground Improvement, 2016Blast densification has long been used to densify loose, saturated sand deposits. Although it is an economically feasible approach to densify large areas, it is not widely used in engineering practice as the design is mostly empirical and some verification tests, such as the cone penetration test, standard penetration test and shear wave velocity test,
