A New Reflectivity Index for Surface Soil Moisture Estimation

IGARSS 2022 - 2022 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2022
In this study, we propose a new approach to surface soil moisture (SSM) monitoring using the change detection technique applied to Sentinel-1 radar dataset. This involves testing a new reflectivity index (IR) deduced from the Fresnel coefficients, directly linked to soil moisture.

Estimation of surface soil moisture content using fractals

Environmental Monitoring and Assessment, 2021
Soil moisture content is a key factor affecting surface evaporation in the hydrologic cycle, with application in water resources management, early drought warning system, irrigation management, and estimation of crop yield. The subject of soil moisture content has long been of interest in hydrology, agriculture, forestry, and soil mechanics engineering.

Relating soil surface moisture to reflectance

Remote Sensing of Environment, 2002
Abstract The objective of this study was to explore the relationship between soil reflectance in the solar domain (400–2500 nm) and soil moisture. Ten soils covering a large range of composition have been sampled. To decrease the large dimensionality of the data set, we reduced the number of wavebands investigated thanks to a simple stepwise linear ...

Multiscale Surface Roughness for Improved Soil Moisture Estimation

IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2020
Surface roughness parameterization plays an important role in passive microwave soil moisture (SM) retrieval. This article proposes a new formulation for estimating surface roughness. The proposed model incorporates the field-scale (micro) roughness as well as topographic (macro) roughness.

Predicting Moisture in the Surface Foot of Soil

Soil Science Society of America Journal, 1956
Abstract A method of predicting moisture content in the surface foot of soil has been developed by the U. S. Forest Service in cooperation with the Corps of Engineers, U. S. Army. By this method, moisture can be predicted for a given soil from the wettest to the driest condition that naturally occurs. In the development of the method,

Surface soil moisture evaluation by a multitemporal satellite approach

2012 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2012
The Multitemporal Ts-VI (MTVI) method has been proposed as a modified extension of the well known Temperature-Vegetation Dryness Index (TVDI), taking advantage of the self-consistency of TVDI but at the same time trying to overcome its greatest constraint for better characterizing and monitoring surface soil moisture conditions over large and ...

Surface soil moisture estimation by TRMM/PR and TMI

IGARSS 2003. 2003 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. Proceedings (IEEE Cat. No.03CH37477), 2004
A surface soil moisture estimation algorithm by microwave radiometer is developed with radiative transfer model for soil-vegetation-atmosphere layers (especially, vegetation layer is focused).

Robust simulation of root zone soil moisture with assimilation of surface soil moisture data

Water Resources Research, 2001
An operational framework is presented for assimilating surface soil moisture remote sensing measurements into a soil‐vegetation‐atmosphere‐transfer (SVAT) model for the robust prediction of root zone moisture time series. The proposed approach is based on analytical treatment of the dynamical equations coupling surface and deeper soil reservoirs.

Surface Heterogeneity Issues in Remote Sensing of Soil Moisture

IGARSS 2008 - 2008 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2008
In advance of two upcoming soil moisture satellite missions, it is important to improve our understanding of the error sources associated with satellite-based soil moisture retrievals. Uncertainties in remotely-sensed soil moisture estimates can be attributed to many factors, including errors in measured brightness temperatures and input parameters ...
