Passive microwave observation of diurnal surface soil moisture
IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 1997Microwave radiometers operating at low frequencies are sensitive to surface soil moisture changes. Few studies have been conducted that have involved multifrequency observations at frequencies low enough to measure a significant soil depth and not be attenuated by the vegetation cover.

Remote Sensing of Surface Soil Moisture
Journal of Applied Meteorology, 1978The unique thermal and dielectric properties of water afford two possibilities for remotely sensing the moisture content in the surface layer of the soil. Observations of the diurnal range of surface temperature, the microwave brightness temperature (emissivity) and radar backscatter of the soil have shown correlations of up to 0.9 with the moisture in

Neutron measurement of surface soil moisture
Journal of Geophysical Research, 1961A neutron probe design for the measurement of surface soil moisture is described. The probe consists of a single BF3 tube, a Ra-Be source in a gamma shield and a plastic shield which serves also as a standard. Adequate accuracy and sensitivity are reported when surface soil is homogeneous.

Impacts of soil surface roughness changes on SMOS soil moisture retrievals
2017 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), 2017The Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity (SMOS) soil moisture retrievals are too dry and noisy when compared to the South Fork of the Iowa River (SFIR), a heavily agricultural watershed with a USDA-ARS in situ soil moisture network. After testing for invalid retrievals, errors in auxiliary datasets, and a non-representative parameterization of scattering in ...

Sensitivity of bistatic scattering to soil moisture and surface roughness of bare soils
International Journal of Remote Sensing, 2010The sensitivity of bistatic scattering coefficient s° to soil moisture (SMC) and surface roughness was investigated by means of model simulations of the incoherent scattered fields performed with the Advanced Integral Equation Model (AIEM) and the second order Small Perturbation Model (SPM). The study was performed by simulating scattering on the whole

Measurements of Surface Soil Moisture and Temperature
1990The monitoring of the energy and moisture fluxes between the soil and the atmosphere as well as of the water budget of the root zone in the soil is recognized as important for applications ranging from the study of biospheric processes at local scales (10s of meters) to the modeling of atmospheric behavior at regional scales (10s of kilometers).

Mapping Field Surface Soil Moisture for Hydrological Modeling
Water Resources Management, 2007Soil moisture is a major control variable on hydrological processes both at the storm event scale and in the long term. The aggregate effect on the mean water balance over an area can be quantified successfully using hydrological models. However, determination of soil moisture distribution for semi or fully distributed models is difficult.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOIL MOISTURE CONTENT AND SOIL SURFACE REFLECTANCE
Transactions of the ASAE, 2005Depending on the topography and soil characteristics of an area, soil moisture, an important factor in crop productivity, can be quite variable over the land surface. Thus, a method for determination of soil moisture without the necessity for exhaustive manual measurements would be beneficial for characterizing soil moisture within a given region or

Estimating Daily Surface Soil Moisture Using a Daily Diagnostic Soil Moisture Equation
Journal of Irrigation and Drainage Engineering, 2012AbstractOne common problem is associated with water balance calculation methods for determining soil moisture for scheduling irrigation: errors in the estimated soil moisture are cumulative and frequent recalibrations are needed. A simple and robust approach to estimation of daily soil moisture using a daily diagnostic soil moisture equation is ...
