Classified: The North Face Files

open access: yes, 2013
“You’re going to need to buy nicer clothes,” my dad told me during our first visit to Gettysburg College. I laughed, thinking it was a typical “dad” thing to say and something I would promptly ignore, but after four years I now see that maybe he wasn’t ...

Revealing Trapped Carrier Dynamics at Buried Interfaces in Perovskite Solar Cells via Infrared‐Modulated Action Spectroscopy with Surface Photovoltage Detection

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A new spectroscopy technique (i.e., pump‐push‐surface photovoltage) is introduced that monitors trapped carrier dynamics at the buried interfaces in perovskite solar cells (PeSCs) via combining optical trap activation by infrared light with surface photovoltage detection.

Mechanical Homogenization Promoting Dual‐Directional Upcycling of Layered Oxide Cathodes

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces an efficient dual‐directional upcycling scheme enabled through a mechanical homogenization pretreatment. It enables various layered oxide cathodes to be reprocessed into fresh NCM cathodes with tailored Ni contents through boosted atomic diffusion in just 4 h of solid‐state sintering.

Enhanced Deformability Through Distributed Buckling in Stiff Quasicrystalline Architected Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Quasi‐periodic metamaterials combine stiffness and large‐strain deformability, overcoming limitations of traditional stretching‐dominated periodic designs that are prone to global buckling instabilities and catastrophic layer collapses. By leveraging non‐uniform force chains, they achieve high isotropic stiffness, stable deformation, and remarkable ...

Rain may improve survival from direct lightning strikes to the human head

open access: yesScientific Reports
There is evidence that humans can survive a direct lightning strike to the head. Our question is: could water (rain) on the skin contribute to an increase in the survival rate?

Two Is Not Always Better Than One

open access: yes, 2014
Since moving to Berlin in January for my semester abroad, I have witnessed many fantastic scenes while riding the U-Bahn. Ranging from a suit-clad man hurdle-jumping into the train to women in hijabs gossiping about another passenger in a burqa, my ...

Detection and Manipulation of Interaction Between Magnetic DyPc2 Molecules and Superconducting Pb(111) Surface

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
The research focuses on the interaction between the magnetic DyPc2 molecules and the superconducting Pb(111) surface. A complex quantum spin system is observed in both DyPc2 molecules embedded in the self‐assembled monolayer and those scattered atop it, where Kondo screening and superconducting pairing coexist and compete.
