Coastal Flood Risk in the Mortgage Market: Storm Surge Models' Predictions vs. Flood Insurance Maps [PDF]
Prior literature has argued that flood insurance maps may not capture the extent of flood risk. This paper performs a granular assessment of coastal flood risk in the mortgage market by using physical simulations of hurricane storm surge heights instead of using FEMA's flood insurance maps. Matching neighborhood-level predicted storm surge heights with

Intermediated Surge Pricing [PDF]
AbstractAlthough Uber and Lyft are known for their flexible “surge pricing,” they are surprisingly rigid in another way: each firm takes a constant percentage of passenger fare whether or not there is a surge. In this paper, I investigate the possible reasons for, and the impact of, this rigidity.

A new robust LMI-based model predictive control for continuous-time uncertain nonlinear systems
This paper presents a new robust predictive controller for a special class of continuous-time non-linear systems with uncertainty. These systems have bounded disturbances with unknown upper bound as well as constraints on input states.

Understanding the detectability of potential changes to the 100-year peak storm surge [PDF]
In many coastal communities, the risks driven by storm surges are motivating substantial investments in flood risk management. The design of adaptive risk management strategies, however, hinges on the ability to detect future changes in storm surge statistics.

This paper deals with the transient deformation of surges (bores) both theoretically and experimentally. Ideal surges in open channels would normally disperse into periodic waves and be transformed to the undular bore. A train of these dispersive waves may finally reach some stable form e.g. solitary or cnoidal vwaves.

The surge is the most common and important instability associated with compressors and its control is very important due to its damaging effects on the compressor system. This paper presents a new method of surge control using a robust adaptive method in

The Mount Pelée May 8th, 1902 eruption is responsible for the deaths of more than 29,000 people, as well as the nearly-complete destruction of the city of Saint Pierre by a single pyroclastic current, and is, sadly, the deadliest eruption of the 20th ...
