Acta Oto-Laryngologica, 1960Acromegaly is a disabling and often fatal disease. As it is usually caused by a pituitary tumour, its manifestations should be arrested by removal of the tumour. Earlier surgical treatment has seldom produced lasting improvement, since radical removal has not been done, partly to avoid the appearance of panhypopituitarism.

It is a benign condition which, microscopically, shows enlarged cystic sebaceous glands, marked fibrosis, and vascular dilation. Rhinophyma is usually seen in males over 50 years of age. The male-female ratio is 10 to 1.
