Survey evidence on the rationality of expectations

Uncertainty and Rounding in Expectation Surveys
This paper examines whether the rounding of survey responses in the case of probabilistic question formats is related to expectation uncertainty. Using data from a survey on macroeconomic expectations of private households in Germany, we analyze self-reported reasons for rounding probabilistic inflation expectations.Dovern, Jonas, Glas, Alexander

Discharge planning update, 1989
Although your hospital will be surveyed only every two or three years, the results of that survey are vital not only to your hospital, but also to your department. And you need to become involved in the process from the presurvey questionnaire to the on-site visit. And you need to prepare for the next survey the day after the last one.

Disciplining expectations: adding survey expectations in learning models [PDF]
Learning estimation of DSGE models is becoming a popular alternative to traditional rational expectation estimation. One of the most cited advantages of the introduction of a learning mechanism in DSGE models is that it generates the observed persistence in economic variables such as inflation and output.

Real expectations: replacing rational expectations with survey expectations in dynamic macro models [PDF]
This paper examines the implications of changing the expectations assumption that is embedded in nearly all current macroeconomic models. The paper substitutes measured or "real" expectations for rational expectations in an array of standard macroeconomic relationships, as well as in a DSGE model.

Inflation expectations and survey design
2022We examine whether inflation expectations obtained by open- and closed-ended questions lead to different inflation expectations through a randomized controlled trial. We find that different questionnaires measure significantly different inflation expectations, especially in the short term.
