A little ‘suspect’? [PDF]

open access: yesBritish Journal of General Practice, 2019
Intelligence agencies like the CIA understand the need for precision when attempting to convey the relative degree of certainty/uncertainty about the prospects of any specific future event occurring. The words chosen to describe how likely something is to happen are important and can have far-reaching consequences in terms of effort then taken to ...

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Suspected testicular torsion [PDF]

open access: yesThe Annals of The Royal College of Surgeons of England, 2012
I was interested to read the article by Tydeman et al on sus-pected testicular torsion. I was confused, however, by the conclusion that general surgical trainees were less likely to discuss the management with the ‘on-call consultant’. The questionnaire used by the investigators asked registrars if they would make the on-call ‘urology’ consultant aware.

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.
