Swash platform morphology in the ebb-tidal delta of the Barra Nova inlet, South Portugal [PDF]
A fieldwork study of an artificially created inlet cut in the barrier island system of the Ria Formosa (South Portugal) was carried out from January to March 1999. This study focused on the updrift swash platform associated with the ebb-tidal delta.

The oral microbiota and periodontal health in orthodontic patients
Abstract The oral microbiota develops within the first 2 years of childhood and becomes distinct from the parents by 4 years‐of‐age. The oral microbiota plays an important role in the overall health/symbiosis of the individual. Deviations from the state of symbiosis leads to dysbiosis and an increased risk of pathogenicity.

Spherulite in the modern aragonitic travertine stromatolite has a calcite core with exopolymers
ABSTRACT Spherulites are spherical to ellipsoidal particles formed by various crystalline substances and can be abiotically synthesised in the laboratory. Among various spherulite types, spherulites composed of calcium carbonate are also found in various natural environments, but their abiotic or biotic origins are still controversial.

ABSTRACT One of the largest wetlands on Earth, the Brazilian Pantanal contains roughly 10 000 natural lakes, about 1000 of which are hypersaline. In these environmentally stressful settings, animal life struggles to survive, while cyanobacteria form extensive mats.

Sound offset responses become highly informative in the auditory cortex
Abstract figure legend Using large datasets of neural responses to diverse sounds recorded across four stages of the mouse auditory system (depicted and colour‐coded on the left), offset responses occurring after the termination of each sound (time window indicated by the orange shaded area superimposed with activity traces) were characterized and it ...

Motion of water and sediment due to non-breaking waves in the swash zone
A long wave run-up theory is applied to the modelling of wave-induced flow velocities, sediment transport rates and bottom changes in a swash zone. First, the properties of the water tongue motion and the resulting lithodynamic response are analysed ...

Distinctive neurophysiological correlates of sound onset and offset perception in humans
Abstract figure legend Electroencephalography (EEG) recordings were obtained from participants listening to successive pairs of 1‐2 s noises in a silent background (Study 1) or successive pairs 1‐2 s silent gaps in a noise background (Study 2). Participants heard the same stimuli in the context of either a duration discrimination task (identifying ...
