Secondary Microplastics Generation in the Sea Swash Zone With Coarse Bottom Sediments: Laboratory Experiments

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2018
Marine beaches worldwide are nowadays exposed to significant contamination by plastics. On the Baltic beaches, polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene are most abundant.

Occasional essay: upper motor neuron syndrome in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
The diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) requires recognition of both lower (LMN) and upper motor neuron (UMN) dysfunction.1 However, classical UMN signs are frequently difficult to identify in ALS.2 LMN involvement is sensitively detected ...

Electrochemical Behavior of Flame‐Sprayed Sc‐Doped AlCoCrFeMo High‐Entropy Alloy Coatings in 3.5% Sodium Chloride Solution

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Scandium (Sc)‐doped AlCoCrFeMo HEA coatings are fabricated via flame spraying with 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 wt% Sc additions. Among these, the HEA‐Sc0.3 coating exhibits the highest corrosion resistance, indicated by a more positive corrosion potential and lower current density.

Triply‐Twinned Metamaterials: Unraveling the Mechanics and Failure Pathways Through High‐Resolution XCT

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Triply‐twinned architected lattices transform deformation from bending to stretching of struts, delivering up to threefold increases in stiffness and strength across polymeric and metallic systems. High‐resolution synchrotron XCT and image‐based simulations reveal how meta‐grain architecture, defects, and AM build orientation govern failure pathways ...

Sediment transport dynamics in the swash zone under large-scale laboratory conditions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
A laboratory experiment was carried out to study sediment transport dynamics occurring in the swash zone of a coarse-sandy beach built in a large-scale wave flume.

The Evolution of Laser‐Induced Damage Patterns in Polymer Stabilized Liquid Crystals: Insights From Morphological Characterization and Thermo‐Driven Simulations

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
A dual‐domain PSLC architecture enables direct comparison of alignment‐dependent laser damage within a single device. Crack‐like and seal‐like morphologies emerge under different damage conditions, and their evolution is interpreted through quantitative image analysis and heat‐driven simulations.

Artificial Intelligence in Autonomous Mobile Robot Navigation: From Classical Approaches to Intelligent Adaptation

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping autonomous mobile robot navigation beyond classical pipelines. This review analyzes how AI techniques are integrated into core navigation tasks, including path planning and control, localization and mapping, perception, and context‐aware decision‐making. Learning‐based, probabilistic, and soft‐computing methods

Design and Performance of Permeable Groins on a Low-Energy Natural Beach

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2020
Beach erosion, ubiquitous of sandy coasts around the world, can be exacerbated or mitigated with the use of hard engineering solutions including groins. The use of groins has been discouraged in many countries despite its capability to reduce sand losses.

Beach face dynamics as affected by ground water table elevations [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
This report presents the results of laboratory studies which were carried out in the Coastal and Oceanographical Engineering Laboratory to investigate the effects of ground water table elevations on the beach profile changes over the swash zone.
