Sweeping gas membrane distillation was investigated as a possible technique for desalination by using a shell-and-tube polypropylene membrane module. Humid air was employed as the vapor carrier gas and the feed solution was circulated in counter-current through the lumen side of the membrane module.

A math. model describing a novel sweeping gas membrane distn. (SGMD) configuration is presented and the sepn. of two volatile components from binary mixts. by this membrane process is theor. investigated. SGMD configuration is modified by using a thermostated sweeping gas in order to enhance the driving forces decrease along the module.

Separation of binary mixtures by thermostatic sweeping gas membrane distillation
Aq. solns. of formic acid were exptl. investigated in a modified sweeping gas membrane distn. (SGMD) configuration. A thermostated sweeping gas was used in order to enhance the mass transfer performance.

Thermal boundary layers in sweeping gas membrane distillation processes
AbstractThe sweeping gas membrane distillation process was analyzed in a plate and frame membrane module, and a method clarifying the contribution of each boundary layer separately was developed. The temperature polarization coefficients of the fluid phases as well as the overall one have been defined, and their effects on the permeate flux were ...

Nature of flow on sweeping gas membrane distillation
Journal of Membrane Science, 2000Abstract The process of sweeping gas membrane distillation (SGMD), with the liquid feed and the sweeping gas counterflowing in a plate and frame membrane module, has been studied. A theoretical model, which was presented in a previous paper and permitted to obtain the temperature profiles inside the fluid phases, has been developed in order to ...

A desalination process through sweeping gas membrane distillation
Abstract A continuous desalinaton process is analyzed, based on a membrane distillation procedure. Both flat and tubular porous hydrophobic membranes are considered. The aqueous solution flows in direct contact with one side of the membrane, while on the other side a sweeping gas flows and strips out water vapour.

Abstract Water and energy are two intimately interconnected issues of strategic relevance for a sustainable industrial development. Herein, we integrated light-harvesting/self-heating membranes and salinity gradient technology with the aim to implement the innovative concept of light-to-heat-to-power conversion.

Response surface methodology and desirability function approach have been applied for modeling and multi-response optimization of sweeping gas membrane distillation process used for concentration of sucrose aqueous solutions. Response surface models have been developed to predict the permeate flux and the sucrose concentration rate.

Desalination, 2020
Abstract Membrane distillation (MD) has shown promise for desalination of produced water (PW), but there are very few studies reported on the performance of MD with real PW and the characteristics of the fouling and scaling in MD. Among different MD configurations, sweeping gas MD (SGMD) is the least studied configuration.

EXTREME COOLING VIA SWEEPING GAS MEMBRANE DISTILLATION
Thermal desalination processes like membrane distillation (MD) aim to have rapid evaporation rates to provide large quantities of fresh water. These processes, which resemble counterflow-heat exchangers with membranes in the middle, conventionally seek ...
