Systematic identification and expression analysis of bHLH gene family reveal their relevance to abiotic stress response and anthocyanin biosynthesis in sweetpotato

open access: yesBMC Plant Biology
bHLH transcription factors play significant roles in regulating plant growth and development, stress response, and anthocyanin biosynthesis. Sweetpotato is a pivotal food and industry crop, but little information is available on sweetpotato bHLH genes ...

Evaluating UAV Multispectral Imagery, Machine Learning and Image Analysis Techniques for Mapping Taro and Sweet Potato in a Smallholder Cropland in Swayimane, South Africa

open access: yesGeo: Geography and Environment, Volume 13, Issue 1, January‐June 2026.
Short Abstract This study evaluates the effectiveness of UAV multispectral imagery combined with machine learning techniques for mapping neglected and underutilised crop species (NUS), specifically taro and sweet potato in smallholder farming systems in South Africa.

Overexpression of the Golden SNP-Carrying Orange Gene Enhances Carotenoid Accumulation and Heat Stress Tolerance in Sweetpotato Plants

open access: yesAntioxidants, 2021
Carotenoids function as photosynthetic accessory pigments, antioxidants, and vitamin A precursors. We recently showed that transgenic sweetpotato calli overexpressing the mutant sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas [L.] Lam) Orange gene (IbOr-R96H), which ...

Iron concentration of potato and sweetpotato clones as affected by location

open access: yesJournal of Agriculture and Food Research, 2021
The effect of growing location on the iron concentration of potato and sweetpotato as determined by ICP-MS was evaluated using freeze dried and milled samples from peeled raw potato tubers and sweetpotato roots.

High‐Quality Genome Assembly of Diplocarpon coronariae Unveils LTR Retrotransposon‐Driven Structural Dynamics in Fungi Evolution

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, Volume 26, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Long terminal repeat retrotransposons (LTR‐RTs) are recognised as a significant evolutionary force capable of shaping the structure and function of the genomes in eukaryotes, including animals, plants, and fungi. However, much remains largely unknown about how LTR‐RTs influence the evolution of fungi at the chromosomal level.

A Novel Sweetpotato WRKY Transcription Factor, IbWRKY2, Positively Regulates Drought and Salt Tolerance in Transgenic Arabidopsis

open access: yesBiomolecules, 2020
WRKYs play important roles in plant growth, defense regulation, and stress response. However, the mechanisms through which WRKYs are involved in drought and salt tolerance have been rarely characterized in sweetpotato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.]. In this

Dynamics of Fusarium Infection in Melon (Cucumis melo): From Roots to Fruits

open access: yesPlant Pathology, Volume 75, Issue 1, January/February 2026.
Roots harboured the highest diversity of Fusarium species and served as the primary entry point for infection. Fusarium incidence increased as plants aged, with all parts showing fungal growth by 45 days after transplanting, indicating progressive colonisation throughout the growth cycle.

Low Nitrogen Fertilization Alter Rhizosphere Microorganism Community and Improve Sweetpotato Yield in a Nitrogen-Deficient Rocky Soil

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2020
Sweetpotato can be cultivated in the reclaimed rocky soil in Sichuan Basin, China, which benefits from the release of mineral nutrients in the rocky soil by microorganisms. Shortage of nitrogen (N) in the rocky soil limits sweetpotato yield, which can be
