Swift heavy ion irradiation induced modifications in sapphire
Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section B: Beam Interactions with Materials and Atoms, 2003Abstract Swift heavy ion irradiation is carried out on sapphire (α-Al2O3) for controlled modification of its optical properties. Single crystals of α-Al2O3 (0 0 0 1) were irradiated at room temperature with 190 MeV Ag ions having Se∼23 keV/nm with fluences varying from 1011 to 1013 ions/cm2.

Damage induced in semiconductors by swift heavy ion irradiation
Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section B: Beam Interactions with Materials and Atoms, 1999Abstract The behaviour of semiconductors under swift heavy ion irradiation is different from that of metals or insulators: no spectacular effect induced by the inelastic energy loss has been reported in these materials. We present here a review of irradiation effects in the usual semiconductors (silicon, germanium and gallium arsenide). The damage is

Defect accumulation in ThO2 irradiated with swift heavy ions
Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section B: Beam Interactions with Materials and Atoms, 2014Polycrystalline ThO2 was irradiated with 2.2 GeV Au ions and characterized by synchrotron X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The diffraction measurements indicated an increase in the unit cell parameter and the accumulation of heterogeneous microstrain with increasing ion fluence, both of which are consistent with

Swift heavy ion irradiation effects in nanocrystalline gold
Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section B: Beam Interactions with Materials and Atoms, 2006Abstract We have studied the effects of irradiation with energetic ions on defect accumulation in nanocrystalline gold (nano-Au). The specimens of nano-Au foil (3–5 μm thickness) with various grain sizes (23–156 nm) are prepared by the gas deposition method and subsequent thermal annealings.

Uniform behavior of insulators irradiated by swift heavy ions
Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section B: Beam Interactions with Materials and Atoms, 2015Abstract Ion induced R e track radii are derived from a universal relation Θ( r ) without involving any materials parameter apart from the melting point T m . The effect is related to the formation of identical ion-induced temperature distributions in track forming insulators for 〈 s e 〉 = S e / N = constant, where S

Swift heavy ion irradiation of graphene: effects of the ion charge states
2019Material modifications using swift heavy ions usually take into account only electronic stopping power of the ion and its velocity. However, as discussed previously [1], for near surface experiments, ion charge state can also play an important role because ions delivered from accelerators can have lower (or even higher) charge state than equilibrium ...

Swift Heavy Ion Irradiation of Crystalline Insulators and Metals
2016This chapter presents a review of the structural modifications induced by electronic excitation in crystalline insulators and metals irradiated with swift heavy ions. After some generalities about electronic energy loss in insulators and the presentation of the main experimental techniques used to observe electronic energy loss effects, results on the ...
