Swirl Coaxial Injector Development

41st Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit, 2003
Abstract : Sierra Engineering and the Air Force Research Laboratory Propulsion Directorate, have undertaken a program to develop gas-centered, swirl coaxial injectors. This injector design will be used in the multi-element Advanced Fuels Tester (AFT) engine to test a variety of hydrocarbon propellants.

Dimensioning a Simplex Swirl Injector

50th AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference, 2014
This paper presents a methodology for sizing swirl injectors that is relevant to liquid rocket engine application, as well as, analyses the results of the experiments executed to investigate the validity of the proposed model. On the first part of this paper, a set of equations used to define the injector dimensions is presented.

Modeling Swirl Decay Rate of Turbulent Flows in Annular Swirl Injectors

AIAA Journal, 2018
Gas turbine combustors often use swirling flows to generate central-toroidal recirculation zones for flame stabilization.

Spray characteristics of plug type swirl injector

2018 Advances in Science and Engineering Technology International Conferences (ASET), 2018
Atomization of liquids is a complicated process. It is a common phenomenon in many industries such as aerospace, automotive, manufacturing (spray drying) and mineral processing. In swirl injectors, swirling motion is spread to the fluid due to the effect of the centrifugal force to spread out in the form of a hollow cone liquid sheet as the fluid ...

Unsteady breakup of a swirl coaxial injector

33rd Joint Propulsion Conference and Exhibit, 1997
The shedding of ligaments and droplets from swirling liquid sheets under atmospheric conditions are studied using two methods. First, photographs are taken and wavelengths are measured directly. Velocimetry data shows that droplets are moving at approximately 13 m/s at 50 mm (axially) downstream of the injector tip.

Vortex Breakdown in Swirling Fuel Injector Flows

Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbines and Power, 2007
It is well known that the process of vortex breakdown plays an important role in establishing the near-field aerodynamic characteristics of fuel injectors, influencing fuel/air mixing and flame stability. The precise nature of the vortex breakdown can take on several forms, which have been shown in previous papers to include both a precessing vortex ...

Nonlinear Modeling of Classical Swirl Injector Dynamics

45th AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference & Exhibit, 2009
*† In this work the authors first present the theoretical equations governing the angular momentum propagation through the injector. Based on these considerations, an existing boundary element method (BEM) code that models swirl injector dynamics was modified to incorporate the new inflow and vorticity wave treatments.
