LOX/LH2 subscale swirl coaxial injector testing

33rd Joint Propulsion Conference and Exhibit, 1997
To obtain design technology necessary for the realization of large swirl coaxial injectors with high performance, multi-element combustors composed of 9-shear-coaxiaI or 9-swirl-coaxial injection elements were tested at a nominal thrust of 10 kN, a chamber pressure of 3.5 MPa, a mixture ratio of 4.5 to 7.5, and a hydrogen injection temperature of 40 to

Transient Flows in High Pressure Swirl Injectors

SAE Technical Paper Series, 1998
<div class="htmlview paragraph">Gasoline direct injection requires that the injection time may be very short in duration, indicating that transient flow effects can have a strong influence on the flow behavior and on the spray properties. Consequently, a computational analysis of the dynamic flow in a high pressure swirl injector was conducted ...

Development of GOX/Kerosene Swirl-Coaxial Injector Technology

39th AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference and Exhibit, 2003
Abstract : In developing an advanced liquid rocket engine, injector design is critical to obtaining the dual goals of long engine life and high-energy release efficiency in the main combustion chamber. A joint effort of Sierra Engineering (Sierra) and the Propulsion Directorate of the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) was conducted to develop a design ...

GDI Swirl Injector Spray Simulation:A Combined Phenomenological-CFD Approach

SAE Technical Paper Series, 2004
<div class="htmlview paragraph">In this work the formation and the evolution of the fuel spray emerging from a hollow-cone swirl injector were investigated. The first aim of the work was to set up a tool for fuel spray simulation in a CFD analysis that can offer a reasonable accuracy with no significant increment in the computational time.< ...

Spray characteristics of gelled propellants in swirl injectors

Fuel, 2012
Gelled propellants behave as non-Newtonian fluids and are promising for future aerospace application because they combine the advantages of solid propellants with those of liquid propellants. Spray formation of gel simulants from swirl injectors was described by carrying out experiments in a spray test facility.

The Design and Characteristics of a Novel Injector: A Lobed Swirl Injector

Volume 4A: Combustion, Fuels and Emissions, 2017
The design procedure of a novel injector — a lobed swirl injector is presented. The lobed swirl injector can play an effective role in swirl generation and enhancing the mixing. Besides, by adjusting the axial position of the lobed swirler, non-premixed combustion can evolve into premixed combustion, and vice versa.

SPRAY CHARACTERISTICS OF AN OPEN-END SWIRL INJECTOR

Atomization and Sprays, 2012
The open-end swirl injector is unique because it has no convergent nozzle; i.e., the diameter of the swirl chamber and the nozzle is the same. Open-end swirl injectors are widely used in Russian oxidizer-rich staged combustion cycle engines, such as the preburner and main chamber injectors used in liquid-oxygen (LOX)/kerosene engines RD-120, RD-170 ...

Unsteady Chemiluminescence Imaging of a Swirl Coaxial Injector

45th AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference &amp; Exhibit, 2009
This research tested a swirl-coaxial injector, originally designed to use liquid oxygen and liquid methane, using gaseous oxygen and gaseous methane under scaled mass flow rates in an atmospheric resonance chamber made of fused silica for CH* chemiluminescence imaging and contained ports for high-frequency pressure measurements.

Combustion Instability with a Single-Element Swirl Injector

Journal of Propulsion and Power, 2007
A single injector element liquid rocket combustion experiment was designed and conducted to investigate the combustion dynamics of a gas-centered, liquid-swirled coaxial injector element. The oxidizer was a mixture of superheated water and oxygen, and kerosene was used as the fuel. The mean chamber pressure ranged from 2.14 to 2.38 MPa.
