First record of young‐of‐the‐year smooth hammerhead (Sphyrna zygaena) in coastal waters of Galicia, northwest Spain

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract The smooth hammerhead (Sphyrna zygaena) is typically considered an oceanic species and is only rarely observed in the cooler coastal waters of the northeastern Atlantic. On 20 December 2024, a juvenile S. zyganea was captured at 25 m depth in the inner Ría de Pontevedra (Rías Baixas, northwest Spain).

First Report of ‘Soft Flesh’ Induced by the Parasite Kudoa thyrsites (Myxosporea) in Commercial Codfish From Norway

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, Volume 48, Issue 4, April 2025.
ABSTRACT Kudoa thyrsites is a myxosporean parasite that infects the skeletal muscle of various teleost fish species globally. Severe infections lead to ‘soft flesh’ in fish fillets, resulting in food spoilage and subsequent discard. While K. thyrsites has previously been identified in migratory Atlantic mackerel in the northern Northeast Atlantic Ocean,

Metazoan parasite infection in the swordfish, Xiphias gladius, from the Mediterranean Sea and comparison with Atlantic populations: implications for its stock characterization

open access: yesParasite, 2014
Thirteen parasite taxa were identified in the Mediterranean swordfish by morphological and genetic/molecular methods. The comparison of the identified parasite taxa and parasitic infection values observed in the Mediterranean swordfish showed ...

Effects of Kudoa thyrsites on Proximate Composition and Texture of Merluccius capensis and Zues capensis

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Kudoa thyrsites is a myxosporean endoparasite that infects fish, frequently resulting in myoliquefaction, impacting the texture and eating quality of fish muscle. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of K. thyrsites infection on the proximate composition and texture parameters of raw fillets from two South African economically ...

Evaluation of the heavy metals (mercury, lead, and cadmium) contamination of sardine (Sardina pilchardus) and swordfish (Xiphias gladius) fished in three Algerian coasts [PDF]

open access: yesVeterinary World, 2019
Aim: This study aimed to evaluate mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) levels in 70 samples of sardine (Sardina pilchardus) and 30 samples of swordfish (Xiphias gladius) fished in the Algerian coasts.

The Occurrence of Microplastic Ingestion in Commercial Marine Fish in Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia

open access: yesEnvironmental Quality Management, Volume 35, Issue 4, Summer 2026.
ABSTRACT Microplastics are polymer‐based particle compositions of various toxic chemicals with size less than 5 mm. Due to their small size, microplastics can be ingested and accumulate in body tissues of organisms. This raises concerns about their toxicity being transferred to humans via food consumption.
