Positional factors in syllabification
Acta Linguistica Academica, 2020AbstractFrom the perspective of standard generative phonological theory, syllable structure is not recorded in the lexicon but it is obtained by means of a syllabification algorithm based on a series of principles. In a given language, the algorithm should parse obstruent+liquid clusters as tautosyllabic both in word-initial and word-internal positions.

Abstract One of the first problems confronted by students of Armenian is the discrepancy between the orthography, which contains consonant clusters of as many as ten members, and the pronunciation, which displays relatively manageable clusters and any number of schwas, almost none of which are reflected in the orthography.

Cyclic syllabification in Mongolian
Natural Language and Linguistic Theory, 1995Mongolian is a language with a rich suffix-based morphology. Underlying forms can contain long consonant strings into which schwa vowels must be epenthesized in order to create well-formed syllables. Syllabification (including epenthesis) is governed by universal principles (the sonority law, maximality, and directionality) and a few language specific ...

Abstract Linear B signs denote a vowel (V) or consonant + vowel (CV). In a very few cases a sign denotes two consonants followed by a vowel (CCV), but in general consonant clusters have to be written either by inserting extra vowels, or by omitting consonants: Most syllables of the pattern CCV have to be written ...

1. The description of phoneme disribution is variously handled in recent studies, some using the word, others the contour, still others the syllable as their unit.' The growing importance of distribution as a part of linguistic description makes it of interest to examine this problem more closely.
