Syllable Structure

2009
Abstract Italian syllable structure is highly restrictive. The language poses several challenges to an analysis, some of which have been taken up repeatedly in the literature. First, in Italian, as in most languages, onsets are relatively straightforwardly restricted by sonority requirements except for a few aspects, most prominently the

Greek Syllable Structure

Diachronica, 1996
SUMMARY This paper investigates the syllable structure of Cyprian, an ancient Greek dialect written with a syllabary. Based on the corroboration of orthographic and metrical evidence, Cyprian is found to have a syllable structure which maximizes onsets to allow clusters of equal or rising sonority (see also Deecke 1884, Meister 1894, Thumb & ...

Syllable Structure

1993
Abstract In this chapter we look at Slovak syllable structure. A general outline is presented in 7.1. We then proceed to investigate the properties of the Syllable Structure Algorithm. Specifically, we address the questions of whether it applies cyclically and whether it is continuous (sections 7.2 and 7.3).

Phonotactics: Syllable Structure

2000
Abstract The phonological or phonotactic well-formedness of a word can be seen as an interplay of two factors: a prosodic and a non-prosodic one. On the one hand, a phonologically well-formed word must be parsable into (wellformed) prosodic units.

Syllable structure in Government Phonology

2017
This chapter outlines how Government Phonology (GP) accounts for syllable structure. Traditionally, syllable structure is encoded by arboreal structure, that is, the syllabic tree with the canonical constituent structure. Rather than talking about the effect of syllabification, GP elevates to theoretical relevance its origin: the lateral relationship ...

In this brief paper Foster presents a tentative chart of the phonemes of the Sierra dialect, with brief ...

Usila Chinantec Syllable Structure

International Journal of American Linguistics, 1962
0. Usila Chinantecl phonology features a number of analytical problems which invite alternative phonemicizations. Velar stops with simultaneous bilabial closure, vowelless words with syllabic m, complex syllable nuclei with varied patterning of syllabic and non-syllabic components-all these features give a certain inevitable hocus-pocus aspect to ...
