Mating history shapes Wolbachia‐induced cytoplasmic incompatibility and female fitness in an insect pest

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Mating order and remating of females by males with different endosymbiont associations strongly shape Wolbachia‐induced cytoplasmic incompatibility, female fitness and offspring sex ratio. An incompatible first mating was weakly affected if followed by a compatible mating and vice versa, indicating strong first‐male sperm precedence with consequences ...

Expanding the mutualistic niche: Parallel symbiont turnover along climatic gradients

open access: yes, 2020
Keystone mutualisms, such as corals, lichens or mycorrhizae, sustain fundamental ecosystem functions. Range dynamics of these symbioses are, however, inherently difficult to predict because host species may switch between different symbiont partners in ...

Intra-host Symbiont Diversity and Extended Symbiont Maintenance in Photosymbiotic Acantharea (Clade F) [PDF]

open access: yes
Photosymbiotic protists contribute to surface primary production in low-nutrient, open-ocean ecosystems and constitute model systems for studying plastid acquisition via endosymbiosis.

Table_2_Diverse Internal Symbiont Community in the Endosymbiotic Foraminifera Pararotalia calcariformata: Implications for Symbiont Shuffling Under Thermal Stress.XLSX

open access: yes, 2018
Many shallow-water tropical and subtropical foraminifera engage in photosymbiosis with eukaryotic microalgae. Some of these foraminifera appear to harbor a diverse consortium of endosymbiotic algae within a single host.

Rapid loss, and slow recovery, of coral reef structural complexity resulting from a prolonged marine heatwave

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
Using Structure‐from‐Motion photogrammetry in a longitudinal study, we show that although coral reef habitat complexity had declined significantly by the end of the most prolonged tropical marine heatwave on record, no further losses were detected and 3 years later the reef had begun to recover this critical ecosystem function.

SEAL LOUSE (ECHINOPHTHIRIDAE) AS VECTORS FOR INVASIVE AND INFECTIOUS DISEASE AGENTS OF PINNIPEDS

open access: yesЮг России: экология, развитие, 2017
The aim of the presented article is to analyze seal lice (Phthiraptera: Anoplura, Echinophthiridae) adaptation to aquatic environment – permanent parasites of pinnipeds, as well as available literature data about seal lice as pathogen vectors of their ...

Consequences of symbiont co-infections for insect host phenotypes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Most animals host communities of symbiotic bacteria. In insects, these symbionts may have particularly intimate interactions with their hosts: many are intracellular and can play important roles in host ecology and evolution, including protection against

Co‐phylogeny and biogeography of the myrmecophilous beetle Paussus favieri (Carabidae, Paussinae) and its host ant Pheidole pallidula (Hymenoptera, Myrmicinae)

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Strict patterns of co‐divergence have rarely been documented other than among organisms and their symbionts. In this paper, using a molecular approach, we inferr the population‐level phylogenies of a Mediterranean ant species Pheidole pallidula and its nest parasite, the obligate myrmecophilous beetle Paussus favieri. We then investigate the role of co‐

Iflaviruses in arthropods: when small is mighty

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Many arthropod species harbor iflaviruses, which often cause covert (asymptomatic) infections, but may still affect host fitness. We review the impact of iflaviruses on arthropod fitness, immunity, behaviour as well as the iflavirus’ host range, transmission, tissue tropism and the interactions with other microorganisms within arthropods.
