Accretion Disks in Symbiotic Stars and their Relationship to Cataclysmic Binaries
2000The symbiotic stars were discovered in the early 1900’s by Cannon and Merrill as late-type giants with surprisingly strong emission lines from H I, He I and He II. Infrared photometry has confirmed the presence of K or M giants in most symbiotics (Allen 1982), while IUE spectra show intense emission lines superimposed on a strong continuous source ...

High-dispersion spectroscopy of the symbiotic star AX Per: A binary model with rapid mass accretion
Astrophysics and Space Science, 1988Results of high-dispersion spectroscopy (∼10 A mm−1) of the symbiotic star AX Per carried out in the years from 1979 to 1987 are reported. The emission line [FeVII] 6086 consists of a narrow and a broad component; the radial velocity of the narrow one varies according to the photometric period 681.6 days.

Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) occur when a white dwarf (WD) in a binary becomes unstable and explodes, but the exact path to this event is unknown. One possible channel, the single degenerate scenario, is that the WD accretes mass from its companion until the WD reaches the Chandrasekhar limit (1.4 solar masses) and explodes.
