Symmetric Upper Probabilities

open access: yes, 2018
As a first step toward developing statistical models based on upper and lower probabilities, we study upper probabilities and upper expectations on the unit interval that are symmetric, by which we mean invariant with respect to equimeasurability.

Phase Field Failure Modeling: Brittle‐Ductile Dual‐Phase Microstructures under Compressive Loading

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The approach by Amor and the approach by Miehe and Zhang for asymmetric damage behavior in the phase field method for fracture are compared regarding their fitness for microcrack‐based failure modeling. The comparison is performed for the case of a dual‐phase microstructure with a brittle and a ductile constituent.

Wreath product generalizations of the triple (S2n,Hn,φ) and their spherical functions

open access: yes, 2011
The symmetric group S2n and the hyperoctahedral group Hn is a Gelfand triple for an arbitrary linear representation φ of Hn. Their φ-spherical functions can be caught as a transition matrix between suitable symmetric functions and the power sums.

Karl Popper and the Mechanisms of Hydrogen Embrittlement

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Representation of the beginning of loss of ductility rather than embrittlement. Small concentrations of hydrogen in a diffusible form within iron are well‐established to harm the mechanical integrity of steels. There are theories that attempt to explain the pernicious role of hydrogen.

Multimodal Data‐Driven Microstructure Characterization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A self‐consistent autonomous workflow for EBSP‐based microstructure segmentation by integrating PCA, GMM clustering, and cNMF with information‐theoretic parameter selection, requiring no user input. An optimal ROI size related to characteristic grain size is identified.

Z(_N)-symmetric field theories and the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz [PDF]

open access: yes, 1996
This thesis is concerned with perturbed conformal field theory, the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz technique and applications to statistical mechanics. In particular, the phase space of two dimensional Z(_N)-symmetric statistical models is examined using ...

Microstructure‐Controlled Crack Propagation and Fracture Resistance in MoSiBTiC Alloy Revealed by Multiscale Extended Finite Element Method Modeling

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A two‐dimensional multiscale finite element analysis framework was established for the first‐generation MoSiBTiC alloy, and the mechanical and fracture‐related parameters of the constituent phases were calibrated through experiments and simulations. The framework provides a basis for analyzing crack propagation behavior in its complex microstructure ...

Influence of Test Temperature and Test Frequency on Fatigue Life of Aluminum Alloy EN AW‐2618A

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The influence of test temperature and test frequency on the fatigue life of EN AW‐2618A is investigated. High‐cycle fatigue tests are performed at different test temperatures and frequencies on the 1000 h/230°C overaged state. Both test parameters reduce fatigue life due to time‐dependent damage mechanisms.

Hermite-Hadamard's Inequality and the p-HH-Norm on the Cartesian Product of Two Copies of a Normed Space

open access: yes, 2008
The Cartesian product of two copies of a normed space is naturally equipped with the well-known p-norm. In this paper, another notion of norm is introduced, and will be called the p-HH-norm. This norm is an extension of the generalised logarithmic mean

High‐Temperature Nanoindentation of Metals: Assessing Thermal Drift, Frame Compliance, and Chemical Composition Effects on the Reported Mechanical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Do not let thermal drift and instrument artifacts deceive high‐temperature nanoindentation results. We compare classical Oliver–Pharr and automatic image recognition analyses across steels and a Ni alloy to quantify these effects. Accounting for artifacts reveals systematic softening with temperature, while Cr and Ni additions boost resistance ...
