JORDAN SYMMETRIC SPACES

We introduce a class of Riemannian symmetric spaces, called Jordan symmetric spaces, which correspond to real Jordan triple systems and may be infinite dimensional. This class includes the symmetric R-spaces as well as the Hermitian symmetric spaces.

Metrization of Symmetric Spaces

A distance function d on a set X is a function X × X → [0, ∞ ) satisfying (1) d(x, y) = 0 if and only if x = y, and (2) d(x, y) = d(y, x). Such a function determines a topology T on X by agreeing that U is an open set if it contains an ∈-sphere N(p; ∈)( = {x: d(p, x) < ∈﹜} about each of its points.

Symmetric Submanifolds of Riemannian Symmetric Spaces and Symmetric R-spaces

Symmetric submanifolds are defined analogously to Riemannian symmetric spaces in the theory of Riemannian submanifolds. This notion was introduced by D. Ferus ([2], 1980) firstly for a submanifold of a Euclidean space and can be easily extended to a submanifold of a general Riemannian manifold.

WEAKLY SYMMETRIC FINSLER SPACES

In this paper, we introduce the notion of weakly symmetric Finsler spaces and study some geometrical properties of such spaces. In particular, we prove that each maximal geodesic in a weakly symmetric Finsler space is the orbit of a one-parameter subgroup of the full isometric group.

The author proves the following theorems: (1) Let \({\mathcal F}\) be a Riemannian foliation of a compact manifold \(M\) with constant curvature \(\kappa\). If \(\kappa=0\), then \(M\) splits locally isometrically as \(B \times F\) and the leaves of \({\mathcal F}\) locally coincide with \(\{p\} \times F\), \(p \in B\).
