We introduce the term skewed symmetry groups and provide a complete theoretical treatment for 2D wallpaper groups under affine transformations. For the first time, a given periodic pattern can be classified not simply by its Euclidean symmetry group but,by its highest "potential" symmetry group under affine deformation.

Matroid Automorphisms and Symmetry Groups
Combinatorics, Probability and Computing, 2000For a subgroup W of the hyperoctahedral group On which is generated by reflections, we consider the linear dependence matroid MW on the column vectors corresponding to the reflections in W. We determine all possible automorphism groups of MW and determine when W ≅ = Aut(MW).
