History-dependent synchronization in the Burridge-Knopoff model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
A three-blocks Burridge-Knopoff model is investigated. The dimensionless velocity-dependent friction force $F(v)\propto (1+av)^{-1}$ is linearized around $a=0$. In this way, the model is transformed into a six-dimensional mapping $\mathbf{x}(t_{n})\to \mathbf{x}(t_{n+1})$, where $t_n$ are time moments when a block starts to move or stops. Between these

Analysis of clinical characteristics and risk factors on serrated polyps with synchronous advanced adenoma in elderly and non-elderly people: a retrospective cohort study

open access: yesBMJ Open
Objectives Serrated polyps (SPs) with synchronous advanced adenoma (AA) may increase the incidence of colorectal cancer. However, current studies do not address this combination of SPs and AAs in detail with regard to their clinical characteristics in ...

Warthin tumor of the oropharyngeal minor salivary gland

open access: yesSAGE Open Medical Case Reports, 2018
Warthin tumor is the second most common benign salivary gland tumor that classically arises in the parotid gland. It can be synchronous, metachronous, multifocal, bilateral, or unilateral, which complicates diagnosis and management. Rare cases of Warthin

Investigation of the Development of Synchronous Condenser Technology

open access: yesEnergies
With the increasing penetration of renewable energy, power systems are facing growing challenges in voltage and frequency stability. Synchronous condensers (SCs) have attracted renewed attention due to their capabilities in providing dynamic reactive ...

What change history tells us about thread synchronization [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the 2015 10th Joint Meeting on Foundations of Software Engineering, 2015
Multi-threaded programs are pervasive, yet difficult to write. Missing proper synchronization leads to correctness bugs and over synchronization leads to performance problems. To improve the correctness and efficiency of multi-threaded software, we need a better understanding of synchronization challenges faced by real-world developers.

The synchronized dance of the magellanic clouds’ star formation history

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society: Letters, 2022
ABSTRACT We use the SMASH survey to obtain unprecedented deep photometry reaching down to the oldest main-sequence turn-offs in the colour–magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and quantitatively derive its star formation history (SFH) using CMD fitting techniques.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Multicentric Giant Cell Tumor of Bone: Synchronous and Metachronous Presentation

open access: yesCase Reports in Orthopedics, 2013
A 27-year-old man treated 2.5 years ago for synchronous multicentric giant cell tumor of bone located at the right proximal humerus and the right 5th finger presented now with complaints of pain in his right hip and wrist of two-month duration. Radiology

Synchronous Volvulus of the Transverse Colon and Cecum Associated with Scleroderma and Lupus

open access: yesRadiology Case Reports, 2021
Colonic volvulus may infrequently occur in the transverse colon, and synchronous double volvulus is a rarely reported phenomenon in the literature. Additionally, intestinal volvulus is a rare but serious complication that has been reported in scleroderma

Somatostatin receptor 4 (SSTR4) is a tumor suppressor in cutaneous and head & neck squamous cell carcinomas

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study identifies somatostatin receptor 4 (Sstr4) as a critical tumor suppressor against skin and head/neck cancers (HNSCC, cSCC, and BCC). The loss of Sstr4 removes a check on cell growth, causing hyperactivation of the MAPK‐ERK signaling pathway (↑).
