Operative aspects of the syndesmotic screw: Review of current concepts
The distal tibiofibular syndesmosis is important for stability of the ankle mortise and thus for weight transmission and walking. Syndesmotic injuries are most commonly associated with fibular fractures, but they can also occur in isolation or with damage to the lateral ankle ligament after traumatic supination.

Is routine removal of syndesmotic screw justified? A meta-analysis
Foot, 2021Syndesmosis injuries are common with rotational ankle injuries, and placement of a positional syndesmotic screw to maintain its reduction is used as the ligaments heal. There is no clear consensus on routine removal or retention of syndesmotic screw. This study aimed to appraise the current evidence both on removal and retention of syndesmotic screw ...

High complication rate after syndesmotic screw removal
Injury, 2015The aim of this study was to determine the rate of complications after routine syndesmotic screw removal. All patients who underwent syndesmotic screw removal at our hospital between 2007 and 2012 were included in the study. Patient demographics, surgical characteristics, radiographic evaluation and complications were recorded from the patients' charts.

Biomechanical Evaluation of Syndesmotic Screw Position [PDF]
To evaluate the stresses in syndesmotic screws and widening of syndesmosis under loading after placement of the screws at different levels from the ankle joint line and to determine the optimal level. From a set of computed tomographic data of an ankle, a 3-dimensional finite-element model was reconstructed.

Technical aspects of the syndesmotic screw and their effect on functional outcome following acute distal tibiofibular syndesmosis injury [PDF]
Introduction Much of the currently available data on the technical aspects of syndesmotic screw placement are based upon biomechanical studies, using cadaveric legs with different testing protocols, and on surgeon preference.
