The Effect of Syndesmotic Screw Level on Postoperative Syndesmosis Malreduction
The Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery, 2022Tibiofibular injury repair of ankle fractures may result in over-compression when performed via a partially threaded screw depending on its placed level. We aimed to examine the relationship between the screw level relative to the tibiotalar joint and syndesmosis malreduction in postoperative radiographs of ankle fractures treated with partially ...

A new protocol for the selected omission of transsyndesmotic fixation in Weber class C ankle fractures was prospectively evaluated in 21 consecutive patients. As proposed in a previous cadaveric study ( J. Bone Joint Surg., 71A:1548–1555, 1989), the protocol suggested that transsyndesmotic fixation was not required if (1) rigid bimalleolar fracture ...

Ankle syndesmosis malreduction is a common problem that leads to significantly worse functional outcomes. This report describes the replacement of a rigid syndesmotic screw with a flexible suture button fixation device to correct fibular translation and tibiotalar malalignment related to screw contact with other tibial implants.

Comparison of the Syndesmotic Staple to the Transsyndesmotic Screw: A Biomechanical Study
Foot & Ankle International, 2005Background: Controversy still exists about treatment of syndesmotic injuries. This study compared the fixation strengths and biomechanical characteristics of two types of ankle fracture syndesmotic fixation devices: the barbed, round staple and the 4.5-mm cortical screw.

Functional Outcomes After Syndesmotic Screw Fixation and Removal
Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma, 2010Ankle fractures with a syndesmotic injury have historically been treated with syndesmotic screw fixation. We compared range of motion and functional outcomes' scores to assess patient benefit from syndesmotic screw and plate removal.Level IV--case series.Level I--trauma center.Twenty-five consecutive patients with unstable ankle fractures and ...

Tibiofibular screw fixation for syndesmotic ruptures: a biomechanical analysis
Surgical and Radiologic Anatomy, 2012The mechanisms of injuries to the tibiofibular syndesmosis include isolated rupture and rupture in combination with ankle fractures. Current concepts of surgical treatment are fixation using bioabsorbable screws, syndesmotic stapling, syndesmotic hooks, and the widely used screw fixation.

Treatment of Syndesmotic Disruptions of the Ankle with Bioabsorbable Screw Fixation
The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery-American Volume, 2002Bioabsorbable implants have restricted indications because of their unique biochemical properties and their inferior biomechanical properties compared with those of conventional metallic implants. The purpose of this prospective study was to assess the efficacy of screws made of polylevolactic acid (PLLA) in the treatment of syndesmotic disruptions ...

A Technique for Removal of Broken Cannulated Tricortical Syndesmotic Screws
Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma, 2008Breakage rates of tricortical syndesmotic screws after weight bearing range from 10% to 29%. Removal of the portion of the broken screw buried within the tibia often proves quite difficult. We report a new technique to remove a broken cannulated syndesmotic screw.

Screw fixation of the injured syndesmosis restores stability but may reduce motion. The purpose of this study is to determine whether functional outcomes and radiographic results after ankle fracture are affected by the status of the syndesmosis screw.Retrospective review of a consecutive clinical series.Level 1 academic trauma center. One hundred six ...

Technical complications of the tibiofibular syndesmotic screw.
The Journal of foot and ankle surgery : official publication of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, 1994Three patients with ankle fractures are presented to demonstrate poor results due to improper application of a syndesmotic screw. In these cases failure of surgical treatment caused accelerated disruption of the ankle mortise with cartilage wear, or instability and joint distraction.
