Bath Vibration During Open Eye Formation in a Physical Model of a Steelmaking Ladle

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
Using a physical model, this study shows that vibration measurements reliably predict open eye size in steelmaking ladles, offering a practical alternative to visual monitoring. Vessel vibrations stabilize faster than the open eye, except at high frequencies near the bottom.

When Time Stands Still: The Destructive Experience of Ambiguous Loss among Mothers of Combat Soldiers

open access: yesSymbolic Interaction, EarlyView.
What happens when stories refuse coherence? This article examines ambiguous loss among mothers of combat soldiers, focusing on how prolonged waiting and uncertainty infiltrate everyday life, eroding sensemaking. Drawing on ethnographic interviews, it explores how mothers experience the contraction of time and space—manifested in suspended routines ...

Between-Word Assimilation and Syntax in Child Language Development: a Case Study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Previous developmental research has shown that interactions exist between the emergence of connected speech processes and the acquisition of syntax. This study is the first to have investigated these interactions in detail, using a dense data corpus ...

Cross-linguistic influence in multilingual language acquisition: The role of L1 and non-native languages in English and Catalan oral production

open access: yesIkala: Revista de Lenguaje y Cultura, 2008
Most research in third language acquisition has focused on the effects that factors such as language distance, second language (L2) status, proficiency or recency have on the choice of the source language (L1) in cross-linguistic influence (CLI).

Baselining Large Language Model Performance in Systems Engineering Using SysEngBench

open access: yesSystems Engineering, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence (AI), large language model s (LLMs) have demonstrated impressive capabilities in generating natural language. However, their proficiency in specialized domains, particularly in the field of systems engineering (SE), remains less explored and unquantified.

Pant-grunts in wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii): the vocal development of a social signal [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
While the gestural communication of apes is widely recognised as intentional and flexible, their vocal communication still remains considered as mostly genetically determined and emotionally bound.

Using Virtual Exchange for Teaching BELF Pragmatics: Developing an Online Negotiation Activity

open access: yesTESOL Quarterly, EarlyView.
Abstract Teaching Business English (BE) is experiencing a paradigm shift to reflect the communicative needs of the global workplace. With the majority of interactions in English now taking place among multilingual speakers, there are increasing calls to integrate perspectives of English as a business lingua franca (BELF) into English language and ...

Parturition timing and the pre‐ and post‐partum behaviour of female moose assessed using animal‐borne video and movement‐based approaches

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Limited information on moose calving behaviour, including parturition timing, cow‐calf interactions, and pre‐ and post‐partum movement patterns hinder our ability to define calving phenology and habitat use. GPS‐collars were deployed on 89 female moose over five years, including eight collars equipped with animal‐borne video and environmental data ...

Topic structures and minimal effort [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The complexity of human languages has always inspired research for some human faculty that makes language learning possible. The system that generates the complexity of human languages, ideally, is simple and effective.

Global meta‐analysis reveals urban‐associated behavioural differences among wild populations

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
Urbanization drives rapid phenotypic change, yet broad patterns of behavioural responses remain unclear. Using a global phylogenetic meta‐analysis, we show urban populations exhibit increased boldness, aggression, exploration and activity—especially in birds—highlighting consistent behavioural shifts and revealing major taxonomic gaps that limit our ...
