The Static Strength of Syntactic Foams

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1969
A failure condition is proposed for the composite material “syntactic foam” based upon an experimental program carried out under combined biaxial and triaxial stress states. The material itself is composed of hollow glass “microspheres” embedded in an epoxy resin matrix.

Pumice/aluminium syntactic foam

Materials Science and Engineering: A, 2015
Abstract A novel filler material is introduced to produce high strength metal-matrix syntactic foam. Packed beds of pumice particles, a low-cost natural porous volcanic glass, with the size range of 2.8–4 mm were infiltrated with molten aluminium alloy. The resulting syntactic foams were subjected to microstructural observations and chemical analysis.

Stress analysis of syntactic foams

Composites, 1976
Abstract The efficient design of syntactic foam composites demands an accurate knowledge of the stress distribution throughout the constituents. The shape and distribution of the included voids have a marked effect on the load-carrying action of the composite.

Syntactic carbon foams

Materials Science and Engineering, 1973
Abstract Syntactic carbon is a low density composite material composed of hollow carbon microspheres bonded by a meniscus of carbonised resin. It has a high strength to density ratio coupled with useful thermal insulating properties and is specially useful for high temperature applications. The paper reviews the raw materials and processes which have

On the elastic behavior of syntactic foams

International Journal of Solids and Structures, 2001
Abstract This work concerns composite materials called “syntactic foams”, i.e., materials made by a polymeric matrix filled with hollow solid inclusions. Explicit formulae for the homogenized values of the elastic moduli of these materials are derived, by means of the physical model and the corresponding elastic solution used by Herve and Pellegrini [

Creep of aluminum syntactic foams

Materials Science and Engineering: A, 2008
Abstract Aluminum syntactic foams with densities of 1.2–1.5 g/cm 3 were deformed at 500 °C under constant uniaxial compressive stresses ranging from 5 to 14 MPa. The foam creep behavior is characterized by a short primary stage and a long secondary stage where the strain rate is constant and minimum, followed by a tertiary stage at high stresses ...

Microstructural Characterisation of a Syntactic Foam

Polymers and Polymer Composites, 2001
Stereological sampling procedures were used to characterize the geometry of the cells of a syntactic foam. The foam, formed by extrusion, consisted of hollow polymeric microballoons in a low-density polyethylene matrix. Estimates of cell volume fraction, number density and the mean and standard deviation of volumes of cells were made using design ...

Preparation of syntactic carbon foam

Carbon, 1972
A pressure molding technique for preparing syntactic carbon foam having high compressive strength and low bulk density (> 500 lb/in2 at 0·18 g/cm3) is described. The use of hollow phenolic resin and carbon microspheres of various types, particle size, and wall thickness, along with different carbonaceous binder materials, solvents, and molding ...

Development of rubberized syntactic foam

Composites Part A: Applied Science and Manufacturing, 2007
Abstract This study explored a novel hybrid syntactic foam for composite sandwich structures. A unique microstructure was designed and realized. The hybrid foam was fabricated by dispersing styrene–butadiene rubber latex coated glass microballoons into a nanoclay and milled glass fiber reinforced epoxy matrix. The manufacturing process for developing

Syntactic polymer foams

1986
The review deals with a special kind of gas-filled polymeric materials: the syntactic polymer foams, or spheroplastics, consisting of a polymer matrix and a hollow spherical filler. The survey covers the following aspects: preparation and properties of polymeric hollow micro- and macrospheres; physical principles of syntactic foam formation: rheology ...
