Processing and Microstructure of Syntactic Foams
2013This chapter discusses processing methods for reinforced syntactic foams and the effect of processing parameters on the structure and properties of syntactic foams. Enhancement of the mechanical properties of syntactic foams can be achieved by incorporation of micro- or nano-scale reinforcements into the matrix material. Dispersion of nanoparticles and

Materials Science and Engineering: A, 2008
Abstract In this study, a cement based syntactic foam core was proposed and experimentally investigated for composite sandwich structures. This was a multi-phase composite material with microballoon dispersed in a rubber latex toughened cement paste matrix.

Microstructural characterisation of syntactic foams
Journal of Materials Science, 2009Three types of hollow microspheres with different average diameters (100–150 μm) and two aluminium alloys as matrix material were used to produce metal matrix syntactic foams (MMSFs) by pressure infiltration. The phases, which formed at matrix-filler interface, were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS).

Syntactic Foams for Multifunctional Applications
2016Owing to their lightweight and high strength characteristics and tailorable end-use properties, rigid syntactic foams fabricated from polymeric binders, hollow micro-spheres, and other fillers, and their variants have assumed great importance in material design.

Fiber-reinforced syntactic foams
2015Long fibers are generally preferred for reinforcing foams for performance reasons. However, uniform dispersion is difficult to achieve because they must be mixed with liquid resin prior to foam expansion. New approaches aiming to overcome such problem have been developed at USC's Composites Center.
