Synthetic or Natural (Bio-Based) Hydroxyapatite? A Systematic Comparison between Biomimetic Nanostructured Coatings Produced by Ionized Jet Deposition

open access: yesNanomaterials
Calcium phosphate (CaP)-based materials are largely explored in orthopedics, to increase osseointegration of the prostheses and specifically in spine surgery, to permit better fusion.

Temporal Aggregation for the Synthetic Control Method

open access: yesAEA Papers and Proceedings
The synthetic control method (SCM) is a popular approach for estimating the impact of a treatment on a single unit with panel data. Two challenges arise with higher-frequency data (e.g., monthly versus yearly): (i) achieving excellent pretreatment fit is typically more challenging, and (ii) overfitting to noise is more likely.

Dammarenediol II enhances etoposide‐induced apoptosis by targeting O‐GlcNAc transferase and Akt/GSK3β/mTOR signaling in liver cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Etoposide induces DNA damage, activating p53‐dependent apoptosis via caspase‐3/7, which cleaves PARP1. Dammarenediol II enhances this apoptotic pathway by suppressing O‐GlcNAc transferase activity, further decreasing O‐GlcNAcylation. The reduction in O‐GlcNAc levels boosts p53‐driven apoptosis and influences the Akt/GSK3β/mTOR signaling pathway ...

Improving Mechanical Properties of Recycled Aggregate Pervious Concrete Using Taguchi Method

open access: yesCivil and Environmental Engineering
The construction demolition is non-degradable. Recycled aggregates were utilized to create sustainable products in pervious concrete manufacture. Adding fibers enhances pervious concrete mechanical properties.

A synthetic analogue of melittin aggregates in large oligomers

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 1992
An analogue of melittin synthesized in the group of E. T. Kaiser (DeGrado, W. F., F. J. Keźdy, and E. T. Kaiser. 1981. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 103:679-681) was investigated by Raman spectroscopy and fluorescence anisotropy decay. In water, the analogue is completely alpha-helical and aggregates in large oligomers of about 50 monomers.

TRAIL‐PEG‐Apt‐PLGA nanosystem as an aptamer‐targeted drug delivery system potential for triple‐negative breast cancer therapy using in vivo mouse model

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aptamers are used both therapeutically and as targeting agents in cancer treatment. We developed an aptamer‐targeted PLGA–TRAIL nanosystem that exhibited superior therapeutic efficacy in NOD/SCID breast cancer models. This nanosystem represents a novel biotechnological drug candidate for suppressing resistance development in breast cancer.

$M$Si$_{20}$H$_{20}$ Aggregates: From Simple Building Blocks to Highly Magnetic Functionalized Materials

open access: yes, 2013
Density-functional theory based global geometry optimization is used to scrutinize the possibility of using endohedrally-doped hydrogenated Si clusters as building blocks for constructing highly magnetic materials. In contrast to the known clathrate-type

Colorectal cancer‐derived FGF19 is a metabolically active serum biomarker that exerts enteroendocrine effects on mouse liver

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Meta‐transcriptome analysis identified FGF19 as a peptide enteroendocrine hormone associated with colorectal cancer prognosis. In vivo xenograft models showed release of FGF19 into the blood at levels that correlated with tumor volumes. Tumoral‐FGF19 altered murine liver metabolism through FGFR4, thereby reducing bile acid synthesis and increasing ...
