Preparing Synthetic Aβ in Different Aggregation States [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
This chapter outlines protocols that produce homogenous preparations of oligomeric and fibrillar amyloid-β peptide (Aβ). While there are several isoforms of this peptide, the 42 amino acid form is the focus because of its genetic and pathological link to Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Elastic properties of anisotropic synthetic calcite‐muscovite aggregates [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 2010
A set of synthetic aggregates, containing mixtures of calcite and muscovite, were compacted with varying uniaxial loads ranging from 20 MPa up to 400 MPa. Their elastic properties have been measured using compressional and shear waves in confining hydrostatic pressures up to 475 MPa.

Self-Organization, Layered Structure, and Aggregation Enhance Persistence of a Synthetic Biofilm Consortium [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Microbial consortia constitute a majority of the earth’s biomass, but little is known about how these cooperating communities persist despite competition among community members.

O-GlcNAc modification blocks the aggregation and toxicity of the protein α-synuclein associated with Parkinson's disease. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Several aggregation-prone proteins associated with neurodegenerative diseases can be modified by O-linked N-acetyl-glucosamine (O-GlcNAc) in vivo. One of these proteins, α-synuclein, is a toxic aggregating protein associated with synucleinopathies ...

Identificação do dano induzido por fadiga e cura de micro trincas em compósitos cerâmicos particulados, voltados à aplicação em pavimentos flexíveis Fatigue damage induced and healing identification in particulate ceramic composites for application in flexible pavings

Organization of astaxanthin within oil bodies of Haematococcus pluvialis studied with polarization-dependent harmonic generation microscopy. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Nonlinear optical microscopy was used to image the localization of astaxanthin accumulation in the green alga, Haematococcus pluvialis. Polarization-in, polarization-out (PIPO) second harmonic generation (SHG) and third harmonic generation (THG ...

Solid-phase synthesis and pathological evaluation of pyroglutamate amyloid-β3-42 peptide

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
Pyroglutamate amyloid-β3-42 (AβpE3-42) is an N-terminally truncated and pyroglutamate-modified Aβ peptide retaining highly hydrophobic, amyloidogenic, and neurotoxic properties.

Numerical simulations of aggregate breakup in bounded and unbounded turbulent flows [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Breakup of small aggregates in fully developed turbulence is studied by means of direct numerical simulations in a series of typical bounded and unbounded flow configurations, such as a turbulent channel flow, a developing boundary layer and homogeneous ...

The role of surface charge in the interaction of nanoparticles with model pulmonary surfactants [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Inhaled nanoparticles traveling through the airways are able to reach the respiratory zone of the lungs. In such event, the incoming particles first enter in contact with the liquid lining the alveolar epithelium, the pulmonary surfactant.
