Fate and propagation of endogenously formed Tau aggregates in neuronal cells

open access: yesEMBO Molecular Medicine, 2020
Tau accumulation in the form of neurofibrillary tangles in the brain is a hallmark of tauopathies such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). Tau aggregates accumulate in brain regions in a defined spatiotemporal pattern and may induce the aggregation of native ...

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Microbiological influences on fracture surfaces of intact mudstone and the implications for geological disposal of radioactive waste [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The significance of the potential impacts of microbial activity on the transport properties of host rocks for geological repositories is an area of active research. Most recent work has focused on granitic environments. This paper describes pilot studies

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Stream Aggregation Through Order Sampling

open access: yes, 2017
This is paper introduces a new single-pass reservoir weighted-sampling stream aggregation algorithm, Priority-Based Aggregation (PBA). While order sampling is a powerful and e cient method for weighted sampling from a stream of uniquely keyed items ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Acid-free Hydrothermal Process for Synthesis of Bioactive Glasses 70SiO2–(30-x)CaO–xZnO (x = 1, 3, 5 mol.%)

open access: yesProceedings, 2020
Bioactive glasses 70SiO2–(30-x)CaO–xZnO (x = 1, 3, 5 mol.%) were prepared by the acid-free hydrothermal method in keeping with green chemical technology. The synthetic glasses were investigated by TG-DSC, BET, XRD, and SEM–EDX methods.

Identification, structure elucidation and origin of a common pyridinium-thiocyanate intermediate in electrospray mass spectrometry among the benziamidazole-class proton pump inhibitors

open access: yesJournal of Pharmaceutical Analysis, 2023
During the analysis of benziamidazole-class irreversible proton pump inhibitors, an unusual mass spectral response with the mass-to-charge ratio at [M+10]+ intrigued us, as it couldn't be assigned to any literature known relevant structure, intermediate ...

Effects of sodium ions on synthesized alkali silica reaction gels [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The alkali-silica reaction (ASR), leading to serious structural degradation, is the chemical reaction between reactive silica presenting in aggregates and hydroxyl ions from cement paste or pore solution. Although the chemical mechanism of ASR attack has
