Synthetic microbial consortia with programmable ecological interactions

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, 2022
Abstract Central to the composition, structure and function of any microbial community is the complex species interaction web. But understanding the overwhelming complexity of ecological interaction webs has been challenging, owing at least partly to the lack of ...

Balancing Electrons to Break the Activity‐Selectivity Trade‐Off in H2O2 Electrosynthesis

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Carrier‐concentration balancing in CuS is achieved by coupling cobalt dopants with cobalt vacancies, converting CuS from p‐ to n‐type to accelerate 2e− ORR while withdrawing excess carriers to optimize *OOH binding for H2O2 desorption. The catalyst reaches 8.14 mol g−1 h−1 with >84% selectivity in 1.0 M KOH and drives robust electro‐Fenton dye ...

The Ecology of a Synthetic Biofilm: Synchronization without a Clock [PDF]

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 2012
Biofilms are the archetype for smart materials where microcolonies of live bacteria and layers of dead cells are encapsulated in a hydrated matrix of polysaccharides, proteins and exopolymeric substances. We engineered synthetic biofilms to study their ecology_i.e. the cells’ relationship to each other and their environment.

Ecological non-linear state space model selection via adaptive particle Markov chain Monte Carlo (AdPMCMC) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We develop a novel advanced Particle Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm that is capable of sampling from the posterior distribution of non-linear state space models for both the unobserved latent states and the unknown model parameters.

Leaftronics: Bio‐Fractal Scaffolds From Leaf Venation for Low‐Waste Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
“Leaftronics” transforms naturally evolved leaf venation into quasi‐fractal scaffolds for sustainable electronics. Polymer‐infiltrated leaf skeletons can be used to fabricate ultra‐smooth, reflow‐ and thin‐film‐compatible decomposable substrates, while making the same lignocellulose networks conducting results in flexible transparent electrodes.
