Modelling of the Characteristics of Synthetic Jet Actuators

35th AIAA Fluid Dynamics Conference and Exhibit, 2005
In this paper, a simple static compressible model and a dynamic incompressible model for circular synthetic jet actuators are described. They are used to investigate the effect of changing actuator geometrical and operating parameters on the magnitude of jet peak velocity at the orifice exit.

THE MECHANISM OF JET VECTORING USING SYNTHETIC JET ACTUATORS

Modern Physics Letters B, 2005
The control mechanism of jet vectoring using synthetic jet actuators is investigated. The final deflection angle of the primary jet is a result of the primary jet controlled by synthetic jets at three different regions. The lower static pressure near the primary jet exit induced by the synthetic jet, the entrainment and absorption of the primary jet ...

Flow separation control via synthetic jet actuation

38th Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit, 2000
A theoretical and experimental analysis is presented for the optimal design of Synthetic Jet Actuators (SJA) driven by electrical motors. The experiments conducted in the water tunnel show that the motor powered zero mass flux tangential jet can completely eliminate separation on an airfoil even in the post stall region.

Flow control with plasma synthetic jet actuators

Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 2007
This paper presents an experimental investigation of the characteristics of a plasma actuator design for flow control consisting of an annular electrode in quiescent and flat plate boundary layer flows. In quiescent flow, the circular plasma region produced on actuation was observed to generate a vertical zero-net mass flux (or synthetic) jet, hence ...

Evaluation of synthetic jet actuators design performance

Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology, 2012
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to evaluate the synthetic jet actuator design's performance based on piezoelectric diaphragms that can be appropriately used for flow separation control.Design/methodology/approachDesign the synthetic jet actuators by means of estimating the several parameters and non‐dimensional parameters.

Separation Control using Synthetic Jet Actuators

2003
The suppression of post-stall separation over an unconventional 2-D airfoil at moderate Reynolds numbers (up to 106) using transverse synthetic (zero net mass flux) jet actuators is discussed. As shown by the authors in earlier investigations, the apparent modification of the surface shape by the interaction domain between the actuator jets and the ...

A Study on Synthetic Jet Actuator Diaphragm

Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Systems, 2015
A synthetic jet actuator (SJA) is one of the most widely used active flow control device which uses a vibrating diaphragm enclosed within a cavity to generate the fluid jet. The effectiveness of the actuator greatly depends upon the design of cavity and orifice and the diaphragm properties.

Investigation of synthetic jet actuator design parameters

SPIE Proceedings, 2004
The vital attention of this project is directed to active flow control over micro aerial vehicles using synthetic jet actuators. Previous research has demonstrated that oscillating micro-jets have the potential to influence the flow characteristics and change the aerodynamic performance of the airfoils.

Modelling of efficiency of synthetic jet actuators

Sensors and Actuators A: Physical, 2015
Abstract A comprehensive and detailed modelling to evaluate the efficiency of energy conversion of piezo-electric actuators driving synthetic jets is developed. The contribution is original because the analysis is based on the energy equations of the two coupled oscillators, the membrane and the acoustic one, which are directly derived from the ...
