When there is no underlying organic cause for constipation, then it is termed functional constipation. This is the cause of constipation in 95% of children.

Antimolding Agents for Syrups*
Journal of the American Pharmaceutical Association (Scientific ed.), 1954The antimolding effects of more than two hundred substances were determined using mycophil agar inoculated with microorganisms from deteriorated syrup. Many of these substances were found to equal or exceed the effectiveness of benzoic acid and esters ofp-hydroxybenzoic acid.
