Aligning Initial Conditions With Long‐Term Model Dynamics to Enhance 4DVar‐Driven Medium‐Range Global Forecasts

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Applying the four‐dimensional variational (4DVar) method in nonlinear systems faces conflicts between a lack of long‐term dynamical information using a short assimilation window and a trap of local minima using a long window.

Innovation and Productivity: Is Learning by Doing Over?

open access: yesEconomic and Business Review, 2022
Labour productivity is one of the key measures of economic performance. It represents the total volume of output produced per unit of labour. This paper examines the influence of business investments in research and development and education on labour ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Input and output data analysis for system dynamics modelling using the tidyverse libraries of R

open access: yes, 2018
From a number of perspectives, system dynamics is a data‐intensive activity. First, each modelling challenge addresses behaviour over time, where historical time series data inform the model‐building process, and techniques such as calibration and ...

Extended predictability of metabolic constraints on fish habitat

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment
Predicting the migration of marine life due to climate change is important not only ecologically but also for the management of valuable living marine resources. Anticipating how the habitable area of species will change on decision-relevant time scales,

Towards Youth Mental Health System Reform: An Evaluation of Participatory Systems Modelling in the Australian Capital Territory

open access: yesSystems, 2023
Australia’s mental health system is failing young people. Calls for accountability, strategic long-term policy planning, and regional leadership have been identified as solutions to guide mental health reform.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Consumer Lending in Banks: System Dynamics Modelling

open access: yesНаукові записки НаУКМА: Економічні науки, 2019
Modern consumer lending, which is carried out by banks, financial companies, and, to a lesser extent, credit unions, is a complex system. This system includes many blocks that interact with each other and affect the result.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...
