ON REPRESENTATION SYSTEMS

International Journal of Algebra and Computation, 1994
We introduce the notion of a representation system: it can be viewed as a generalization of a numeration system in an integer base by means of which certain words on a finite alphabet can be represented. We show that under suitable hypotheses, concatenation of words is represented by a right-synchronized rational relation. We study languages which are

Representational Systems

Minds and Machines, 2009
The concept of representation has been a key element in the scientific study of mental processes, ever since such studies commenced. However, usage of the term has been all but too liberal--if one were to adhere to common use it remains unclear if there are examples of physical systems which cannot be construed in terms of representation.

On Representations for Continuous Dynamic Systems

IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 1992
Abstract Through the use of a simple example involving a buffer tank, we illustrate the problems faced when attempting to formalize the dynamic aspects of a continuous process system. The problems are especially severe if we attempt to employ a purely qualitative representation.

Self‐Representation in Nervous Systems

Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2002
Abstract:The brain's earliest self‐representational capacities arose as evolution found neural network solutions for coordinating and regulating inner‐body signals, thereby improving behavioral strategies. Additional flexibility in organizing coherent behavioral options emerges from neural models that represent some of the brain's inner states as ...

A Representation of Relational Systems

2003
In this paper elements of a theory of multistructures are formulated. The theory of multistructures is used to define a binary representation of relational systems.

Representation of Joints in Multibody Systems

ZAMM - Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics / Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, 1988
AbstractA description of the interconnections between the bodies of a multibody system is given in terms of mode vectors representing constrained relative motion and generalized applied and constraint interaction across joints. The representation can be applied to develop joint libraries for general purpose multibody programs thus releasing the user ...

Systems And Their Representations

1996
Representations of dynamical systems play an important role in the theory of adaptive systems. However, it is the system that determines its properties, not the way it is represented by equations. Therefore, not withstanding the fact that representations are extremely convenient in analyzing dynamical systems, it is important to be able to define ...

Computational Representation of Biological Systems

2009
Integration of large and diverse biological data sets is a daunting problem facing systems biology researchers. Exploring the complex issues of data validation, integration, and representation, we present a systematic approach for the management and analysis of large biological data sets based on data warehouses.

Representations of complex financial systems

Proceedings of the 30th European Conference on Cognitive Ergonomics, 2012
The main objective of the study is to get insight in the knowledge representations of complex financial products in novices and experts and in the effectiveness of the reasoning and decision making strategies that are used to solve problems in the finance domain. It is not known how and why consumers make decisions on finance.

Representation systems for data exchange

Proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Database Theory, 2012
The notion of representation systems describes structures that are algebraically closed under queries. It has recently been realized that representation systems are highly relevant also in the context of data exchange. We extend the notion of representation system to encompass data exchange mappings and their composition.
