Computational audition: Auditory perceptual organization and systematic music theory

The term ‘‘computational audition’’ encompasses top-down and bottom-up approaches in hearing, speech, and music. As an information processing approach, the main task is to relate auditory funtion (i.e.,perceptual processes and representational structures) to structure (i.e., neural circuits).

Abstract Leman's recent book is examined from both musical and scientific perspectives. The book describes an important new development in the context‐sensitive modeling of musical pitch perception, and a promising basis for the modeling of other musical parameters such as timbre, and even emotion.

Abstract In Tamil Nadu, India, the parai frame drum is traditionally performed by members of outcaste, untouchable communities. In villages, it is the caste duty of these hereditary musicians to announce auspicious occasions like festivals and weddings as well as inauspicious occasions like funerals.
